The Countdown for the Kentucky Derby has already begun and the time’s quite right to discuss the best two year olds of the season, never to forget, their participation in the Breeder’s Juvenile Cups may play pivotal to their ratings for their sophomore season. Recently bloomed into stronger and faster two year olds, allows the fresh-out-of-barn fellows so much motivation to be racing in a well co-ordinated platform where they can show case their inherent racing talents. Pedigree always shows.
And when we take a look at the starts this season for the two year olds, the top ten on the list of almost 250 Kentucky Derby aspirers includes Dixie Unions, Union Rags followed in close rating with just a 0.01 difference is Creative Cause from Giant’s Causeway. Next in line is Hansen by Tapit, the top three would all be racing for the Breeder’s Juvenile Cup next on November 5th. Going down the ist, the current ratings state Currency Sweep, a Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes winner followed closely by Dabirsim, Jake Mo and Bob Baffert’s Drill stalks right behind. Unbridled’s Song sired Fire on Ice, Todd Pletcher’s Overdriven and finally Bernardini’s Alpha close the top ten aiming for the Derby. However the Breeder’s Cup remains; the possibilities of horse racing, however predictable we may make it look, will always remain fickle.
Looking at who tops the list, Union Rags comes from the one and only famous sire Dixie Union, who until recently was the most commendable sire in the business, with more than 39 stakes winners and as many as 20 who have a guaranteed spot as promising graded stakes winners. Dixie was euthanized the previous year owing to a degenerative neurological illness only to fail seeing his son Union Rags rising to fame with his first ever win at the Three Chimneys Saratoga Special, a graded 2 event. Union Rags won by a startling 7 ¼ length race marking his presence on the field of his competitor two year olds.
Creative Cause who is the second most rated two year old, is by Giant’s Causeway and has already made 4 career starts and won 3. He is now headed for the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile after an impressive workout session at Hollywood Park. Creative Cause’s last impressive run was at the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes held at Santa Anita, fall this season, which he obviously won against a field comprising of Super Candy, Loukas, Drill, Basmati and Ruler of Dubai. Each one of them carried a load of 122 pounds.
The Kentucky Cup Juvenile winner, Hansen, has a lot resting on him owing to his sweeping performance at the Turfway Park. The early pace setter may raise a little doubt about him running as a long shot, but Hansen most definitely carved a niche on the radar with his six furlong timing of 1:11.48.
