Ayurvedic perspective on vitiligo

In ayurveda, Vitiligo (Leucoderma) is known as shvitra kushth. Appearance of white patches with slight red coloration on skin is a characteristic of vitiligo. It is often without any swelling in any other local wounds or plagues or pus formation.

There is complete loss of melanocytes in the affected patch of skin. There may be a positive family history of the disorder and this type is associated with autoimmune diseases such as diabetes and thyroid. Vitiligo is usually very difficult to treat. With a proper care plan and ayurvedic treatment procedures, curing of Vitiligo is possible. During treatment very small blackish spots appear on the white patches.  These spots keep on spreading and the skin gradually becomes normal. Line of curing of this type its not contagious.

In terms of ayurveda pitta is the dosha which is responsible for the occurrence of Vitiligo. When it is disturbed and in abnormal level it affects rakt dhatu (blood) , maas dhatu (flesh ) maid  dhatu (fat ) because of that human body can cause white patches which spread. Quantity of melanin is reduced the skin becomes white.

Causes of Disturbed Pitta Dosha

Chronic constipation malfunctioning of liver, jaundice, stomach aliment like worms, diseases which effect stomach and intestines typhoid , chronic diarrhea irregular food habits , in digestion insufficient sweating hereditary , mental tension or worries, syphilis, tubercular constitution , burn wearing clothes tight at the waist meat-eating.

Management of Vitiligo in ayurveda imbalance of bhrajaka pitta that colors the skin and can be compared to melanin causes discoloration. Bhrajaka pitta’s secretion is related to liver function and another part of disturbed bhrajalca pitta related to digestion.
