What is Superstition?

Superstition means a blind, wrong faith. Superstition is a result of ignorance. Owing to lack of knowledge to reason out why certain incidents occur, one adopts the widely accepted irrational beliefs that have been in practice for years together, generation after generation. Superstitions give rise to fear; the fear that something wrong will happen if not done according to said belief.

Even in today’s modern age, living in the world of science and technology, people believe in superstitions that bring good or bad luck, like crossing of a black cat will bring bad omen, eye twitching is again a bad omen, sweeping floor after evening will drive away Laxmi (money) from home, should not cut nails and hair on Saturday, tasks done in a group of 3 will get spoiled, sneezing before starting some task is not good, eating curd and sugar before leaving for an exam brings good luck, beginner’s luck, considering 7 as a lucky number.
If we think logically, how can these things bring me bad or good luck?

In ancient days there was no electricity, so perhaps there were chances of sweeping away precious things in dark. And we started considering it as money will go away even today if we sweep the floor after evening. How can sneezing or eye twitching be considered bad when they are plain and simple body’s involuntary reactions? Occurrence of above incidents and something bad happening at the same time could be a mere co-incidence. But due to lack of reasoning, people started taking it as bad omen. There is also a strong belief about trance possession (someone being possessed by Holy Spirit) which is deemed as a gesture of blessings from the Goddess to do away with all their hardships so that they can live in peace.

These beliefs are passed on from generation to generation and accepted without any reasoning.
Many believe in Astrology, Vastu shastra, Feng Shui and invest huge amount in these sciences in order to receive prosperity and good luck while staying in their homes. But did we check if we really received prosperity and whether all our problems were solved after doing all of this? The science may be right, but it is a science of foretelling the future.

These sciences can maybe tell your destiny, but they cannot change your destiny. If it could, then first and foremost, the astrologers, Vastu practitioners, Tarot readers and Feng shui consultants should themselves have been very happy and successful and would have no problems whatsoever in life. But that’s not the case, they too have lots of problems.

So, if we understand the core science behind our bad and good luck, we will be in a better position to relate things. As per Param Pujya Dadabhagwan,”Give what you would want to receive. That is the principle of karma.” Whatever seeds of karma you have put in your past life, you will have to bear the fruits of it in this life. You give good, you will receive good; you give bad, you will receive bad. This is the science of karma.

Therefore, whatever happens to us is due to our own good and bad karmas, no one outside is responsible for it. And effect of karma is inevitable. Whatever is destined to happen will happen and it cannot be changed. No one has the power to change it. Then how can a black cat change our luck?

We must have done something wrong, hence something wrong happened with us. Things will happen in our favor due to our own merit karma, and not because we wore some gemstones or followed some vastu tips.
Since we do not have enough strength and the right understanding to face situations boldly and bravely, we resort to these superstitions and Holy Spirits to get some relief. So we should actually ask for strength from Goddess, who is in the form of energy, to enable us to face any situation boldly, rather than asking Goddesses to change the situations, which is not possible as per the science of karma.

Once we gain even little inner strength to face difficult situations, then by the scientific law of multiplication, our strength will increase multifold. Understanding and applying the Gnani’s given principles like “Whatever Has Happened Is Justice” and “Fault Is of The Sufferer” into our life, shall give us added strength to cope up with difficult circumstances. And once the knowledge given by Gnani (Gnani-sangnya) is followed, the effect of the knowledge passed on by people (loksangnya) is bound to go extinct!
