Warning! Red clover and Menopause Relief or Danger?
Written by Chellie Hillman
Red clover is a plant that grows in the wild and mostly it is used for grazing cattle and other animals. This is a native plant of Europe, Central Asia and northern Africa.
In Europe, red clover herb (Trifolium Prantense) is mostly cultivated and used as a salad herb and as a tonic.
Traditionally, the plant has been used to treat a number of conditions that include: cancer, whooping Cough, respiratory problems, and skin inflammations including psoriasis and eczema. It was also used as a blood purifier, expectorant (helping clear lung mucous), improving circulation and helping in the cleansing of the liver.
Its flower or the head of the plant is the part used for herbal remedies. The flowers are slightly sweet and have globular heads of reddish-purple flowers which form the basis of menopausal remedies, effects and other treatments.
It has been found to have estrogen-like substances known as isoflavones (phytoestrogens), anti-oxidants and anticoagulant chemicals largely called coumarins especially in the red clover herb. It also contains other beneficial nutrients including calcium, chromium, potassium and others.
Red Clover And Benefits
Red clover efficiently relieves menopause symptoms. In Menopause hot flashes are quite common. The high concentrations of Isoflavones help to relief hot flashes symptoms including other menopause symptoms that are brought on by estrogen deficiency. These include night sweats, skin problems, mood swings and no sex drive. Red clover also helps to restore the vaginal thinning and atrophy.
Red clover is a good alte ative for Hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Red clover is known to supply the needed estrogen in women to avoid its loss in women. Therefore the intake of red cloves has the same benefits as HRT which is considered as less expensive in terms of cost. This herb is usually taken as a supplement.
Red Clover And Side Effects
People taking red clover supplements for a period more than one year, can experience a few side effects.
They include the following: Headacher Muscle pain nausea and rushes. They are mild and do not need medical attention.
However, some people depending on their psychological conditions may not be advised to take this herb.
They include:
Pregnant womenr Breastfeeding mothersr Women on Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or those taking birth control pills.
This is simply because the red clover plant may cause unwanted interactions with other drugs. People on blood-thinning medications:The effect of blood-thinning and blood purifying is pronounced if one uses the red clover plant thus leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Therefore people under this medication should avoid the plant.
Women on cancer-treating drugs:Red clover is associated with reduction of cancer. But red clover’s estrogen-like compounds may increase the risk of women developing lining cancer of the uterus or have an adverse effect on the cancer cell growth. Therefore, people with hormone sensitive cancers are advised to avoid taking red clover plant.
Administration: Red clover is available in various preparations. They include teas, tinctures, tablets, capsules, liquid extracts and other extracts that are standardized to specific isoflavones contents.
