Shingles is a kind of skin rash. It is caused by the chicken pox virus called herpes varicella-zoster. After chicken pox, the virus lives inactively in the nervous system. Certain factors reactivate this virus and cause Shingles. Anyone who has suffered from chicken pox, is at the risk of getting shingles. It is contagious. It can spread to those people who have not had chicken pox. They end up suffering from chicken pox. The contagious stage is before the crust forms. This can affect both men and women.

The main cause of shingles is the reactivation of the virus. The virus is no longer dormant and travels to a nerve. This causes rashes on the skin wherever the nerve is or a part of that area.
