Once the decision has been made to use air freight services to move materials from one place to another the customer can do some things to help guarantee those materials arrive safely.

The first thing concerns the packaging used to protect the item(s). The packaging should be as sturdy as is needed to keep the items well contained while not being so heavy as to increase the cost of shipping. Ordinary cardboard boxes will work just fine for durable goods that are not water sensitive, but may be inappropriate for goods that can sustain substantial damage from minimal moisture incursions. For water sensitive items wrapping them in plastic sheeting prior to packing in a cardboard box or using water resistant packaging is more appropriate,

The item should be snugly packaged with packing peanuts to ensure that it doesn’t shift around inside the box during transit. Once the material is securely inside the package a water resistant strapping tape should be used to close the box to keep it safe during the normal stresses of moving.

Use a printed label in at least two locations on the outside of the container. Printed labels will assure the legibility of the label better than handwritten labels. It is the responsibility of the customer to be familiar with the company’s rules and regulations applicable to shipping their merchandise. Likewise it is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that the materials being shipped are legal both in the originating site as well as at the destination.

Dangerous goods or chemicals often have specific regulations concerning how and when they may be shipped. Many services refuse to ship such materials at all. Even if a company does accept these types of goods for shipment they often require further documentation to ship them. The customer should have the safety documentation readily available before the package is picked up.

When shipping perishable items, the customer should be aware of the schedules for delivery and of how the company tracks deliveries. Most air freight services have some way for the customer to keep track of where a given shipment is at a particular time. It is the customer’s responsibility to know these procedures prior to entrusting the package with the shipper.

Following these tips can help ensure a safe and efficient air freight experience. The customer should be aware of the normal risks involved in using air freight services. Air traffic accidents so happen and while the company will do all they can to avoid such occurrences; insurance against such things is a good idea.
