If you’re like me, you’ve got a problem in your head. No, I’m not talking about a mental problem. I’m talking about tinnitus remedies for the noise that seems to emanate from your ears. It’s a very common problem and that’s why I’m writing about it.

Do you hear a ringing, hissing or any other “unnatural” sound in your ears? Do you hear this sound all the time, or what seems to be all the time? Is it enough of a sound to bother you? If your answer is yes, you probably have tinnitus.

Millions of people in the U.S. have tinnitus. And that’s why people like us are searching for tinnitus remedies that work. People with severe tinnitus sometimes have trouble hearing, working and sleeping.

The causes of tinnitus include hearing loss, exposure to loud noises or medicines you may be taking for various health problems. Tinnitus can also be a symptom of other health problems, like allergies, high or low blood pressure, tumors, problems in the heart, blood vessels, jaw and neck. There are too many possibilities to blame only one cause.

Treatment of course, would depend on the cause. Treatments could include hearing aids, sound-masking devices, medicine and even ways to learn how to cope with the noise.

Tinnitus is usually a symptom of some other condition rather than a disease in itself. If the condition is cured, then the tinnitus goes away as well. If the tinnitus is caused by damage to the ears by some excessively loud noise, then the only way to cure that is to avoid the loud noise completely. The only thing that would help in this situation would be avoid the cause. Believe it or not, prescription drugs can also cause tinnitus. Check with your doctor or pharmacist when taking drugs for other medical reasons, to see if the medication can contribute to your problem.

One of the tinnitus remedies you can use is the herb Ginkgo Biloba. It’s been shown to really help the tinnitus symptoms. It’s easy to get and fairly inexpensive. Using cheaper, lesser known brands is usually much less effective. The only drawback to using Ginkgo Biloba is that it shouldn’t be used by people already using blood thinners, like the popular drug, Coumadin.

Eating a good diet and healthy habits has been known to ease the suffering of people with tinnitus. A diet rich in the B vitamins, and minerals, especially zinc, has been shown to help alleviate the symptoms. If you’re a smoker, quitting smoking and exercising definitely have a positive effect on circulation, which in turn, increases the blood flow to the inner ear. These are all proven steps in greatly overcoming the symptoms of tinnitus.

Tinnitus remedies that have also proven successful for some types of tinnitus are called masking devices. They are hearing aid type devices, which disguise the ear noises. Even weeks, after the patient removes the masking device, a residual inhibition of ear noises is temporarily diminished. This is not a permanent cure because the symptoms seem to go away, but many times the person eventually has to go back to using the masking device. It’s still a proven treatment though.

There is also “Tinnitus Retraining Therapy,” which is a counseling technique used to teach tinnitus sufferers how to refocus their attentions away from the ill effects of tinnitus. The results from clinical studies overseen by the Department of Veteran Affairs indicated that TRT was significantly more effective in comparison to traditional counseling or non-treatment. It uses a sound generator that sends a special broadband signal that is adjusted over time to habituate the person to his or her tinnitus.

Unless the underlying condition can be cured, the tinnitus symptoms cannot be completely cured. Because the underlying cause must be treated, tinnitus remedies that don’t first address those issues will not provide any lasting results. That’s why it is important to use the proven treatments that we know of for tinnitus sufferers.
