Swiss Air, in fact, Swissair was the former national airline company of Switzerland, which was started in 1931 by combining two airline companies Ad Astra Aero and Balair; however, closed its operations in 2002, up to which time it operated its flights from the hubs of Zurich Airport, Geneva Cointrin, EuroAirport Basel-Mulouse-Freiburg, with a fleet size of 76 working on 157 destinations.

During 1960s Swissair operated so well that its revenues were sky rocketing and the airline world started calling it as ‘The Flying bank’ to go with the reputation of Swiss banking in the world’s eye. In 1997 the Swissair group was renamed SAirGroup carrying four subdivisions, namely SAirlines, SAirServices, SAirLogistics and SAirRelations, while the new organization was going on a ‘Hunter straegy’ expanding through acquisition of smaller companies, unfortunately it had to face an economic turndown following September 11 attacks in the US, and with the Swiss Federal Government’s assistance, it was kicking and alive till 2002.

However, Swiss International Air Lines was formed taking most of the routes of Swissair, also the planes and staff, although the SAirGroup company was on the process of liquidation, while the newly formed company was taken over by Lufthansa in 2005.
