LCD displays are an improvement over previous technology and make it possible to have conveniences that would otherwise be impossible. Due to the lightweight construction and digital circuitry, miniaturized products became more affordable. Almost every household could own and enjoy the latest in personal assist accessories. Here is a brief recap of their history

In the beginning were pocket calculators and wristwatches with LCD displays. A person could manage a checkbook without waiting until they got back to the office or returned home. Some of these were solar powered and did not care if the light source was artificially supplied. Wrist watches included additional features to help keep track of important dates, and only needed a battery replaced approximately once a year.

Mobile devices carrying LCD displays made an entrance on the stage of life and provided people with the convenience of never missing a phone call. Color and the ability to code tasks and important dates to maintain priorities became commonplace. Then the keyboard became a scaled down version of a computer keyboard and life changed for the better. Texting was no longer an arduous task.

Motorized vehicles experienced standard features that replaced the old mechanical dials of meters and gauge reports with interesting LCD displays. The dashboard became a place to imagine sitting at the cockpit of a plane with every light revealing some important information about the operation of the automobile. Of course, a digital clock was included in the mix for another example of liquid crystal displaying.

Television changed from tube type monitors to a small world of embedded crystals that magically produced exactly the right colors for watching favorite television shows, sports, and movies. Pixels seemed to take on a life more reminiscent of the world of magic as they flashed from one color to another much like little pixies. Clarity took on a completely new meaning and the world of digital information became commonplace through the movement of the lights.

Video advertisements escaped from the confines of a heavy box sitting in the living room or den. Outdoor signage appeared and lit up the roadways with spectacular colors dancing across the screens. Sitting at a stop light could mean having enjoyable entertainment, or watching a news report and finding the weather report for the next seven days. Reminders of upcoming events at local theaters and arenas helped plan pastime activities for friends and family.

The old days of scoreboard keepers gave way to LCD displays allowing instant display of the last point of any sporting event. Fast action also became fast results. No more waiting while an attendant gathers scorecards from a panel of judges, just keep an eye on the scoreboards where they post the scores at lightning speeds. Instant replays are exactly that and shown on the same screen as the live action telecasts.

LCD displays may seem commonplace but new advancements continue to make news. USB powered units are available that minimize use of electricity and help lower utility bills. Touch screen technology is old hat to such innovations as 3D technology that brings fast action and video games to a completely new level.
