The Conscious Mind...
Our conscious mind is the one that we are perhaps more aware of. It is the one that we use to make choices, decisions and conclusions, or to put forward logical arguments and sound deductions. In order to truly succeed in life, we would be well aided by the ability to use our mind more fully. This involves engaging the subconscious mind.

The Subconscious Mind...
Your subconscious mind has incredible power in controlling what you experience in your life,
from the types of food you eat to the actions you take each day, to how much money you earn, and even how you react to difficult situations. Almost everything is guided by your subconscious interpretations and beliefs. Your subconscious mind runs on auto-pilot like an airplane. It has been precisely programmed to follow a specific route and you cannot deviate from that route unless you change the coordinates programmed into it first. The subconscious is the part of your mind that operates below your normal level of consciousness. At this moment you’re primarily using your conscious mind to read these words and absorb their meaning, but beneath that mental focus, your subconscious mind is working hard behind the scenes, absorbing or rejecting information and ideas based on existing beliefs you have about the world around you. Your existing beliefs began forming and developing when you were a small child. With every experience you have had and continue to have, your subconscious mind soaks in information like a sponge. It rejected absolutely nothing whilst you were young because you didn’t have any pre-existing beliefs to contradict what it perceived. It simply accepted that all of the information that you received during your childhood was 100% true. It is easy to see why this could become a problem later on in life! Every time someone called you stupid, worthless, slow, lazy, or worse, your subconscious mind just stored the information away for reference. You may also have received messages about your potential in life or limitations you’ll face based on your physical abilities, skin color, gender, or economic status. By the time you were 6 or 7 years old, you already had a rock solid foundation of beliefs based on all the programming you received from your family, the people in your life, television shows you watched, and other environmental influences.

How Does This ‘Old’ Programming Affect You Now?
Now that you’re an adult, you may think that you can simply discard the negative or untrue messages that you have absorbed during your early years in life. However, it’s not quite that simple. Remember, all of this information is stored below your level of conscious awareness. The only time you will be aware of it is when it limits your progress in creating a balanced, productive and successful life. Have you ever tried to achieve a goal and kept sabotaging yourself at every turn? It is important to understand that you’re not defective or doomed to fail no matter what you do. It is more likely that you are carrying some old programmed beliefs that are conflicting with the new conditions that you would like to create. This is great news because it means that you can achieve just about anything that you want to in life, as long as you first take the time to reprogram your subconscious mind by removing these negative beliefs that are holding you back!

The Programming Is Still Going On...
Every experience that you have, makes you draw certain conclusions and that will guide your future actions. For example, what kind of message do you think would be stored if you were rejected by someone you cared about? Your subconscious mind would immediately go hunting through your stored memories and find other similar examples of rejection and draw a conclusion that you’re somehow unworthy or unlovable and deserve to be rejected. The interesting thing is this... If you have a life experience that conflicts with an already deep seeded belief, your subconscious mind will either reject it or re-map it so that it goes along with your existing view of reality. Here is an example: Let’s say you have a deep seeded belief that you are unattractive, and an attractive person expresses an interest in getting to know you better. Most likely the first thing that you’re going to think is that it must be a joke or a cruel trick of some kind. You wouldn't believe that this person finds you attractive because you already believe that you’re unattractive. Under the surface of your conscious awareness, your subconscious is shouting, “This person is way too attractive to be interested in me, something isn’t right here". Then you will either reject that person before they can reject you, or otherwise do something to sabotage what could have been a great and healthy relationship. The same thing happens when you struggle to achieve your goals. Eventually you start to believe that you aren’t capable of success, so you come to expect failure and end up doing exactly that over and over and over again. You can probably imagine many other situations where your subconscious mind holds you back. However, You can eliminate these accumulated beliefs if you know how to!

How To Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind...
There are many different ways to overwrite the limiting or damaging beliefs that are stored in your subconscious mind. You could work simultaneously with all of these strategies, but it will be much more effective if you pick just one or two methods to start. You want to give them your full attention rather than skipping around and diluting your efforts. Remember, you can always incorporate additional techniques over time.

Environmental Influences...
Have you ever considered the effect that your environment has on your subconscious mind? Remember that your subconscious mind is absorbing information constantly and forming beliefs based on that information. If your day to day environment is filled with negativity, imagine what kinds of beliefs are being absorbed into your subconscious. Your first action is to strictly limit the negativity that you’re exposed to from this moment onwards. Avoid watching the news unless you absolutely have to, and avoid spending too much time with negative people. Instead, search for positive information to read and watch, and spend your time with positive, successful people that are a pleasure to be around. Over time you will find that more encouraging beliefs are being absorbed into your subconscious, which will in turn alter the way that you perceive yourself and your potential.

Your subconscious mind responds well to images, so visualization is a great way to program your mind with positive, and motivating images. Try to spend 10-15 minutes each day visualizing positive and motivating scenes that feature you and your life experiences. For example...
Being in a loving relationship
Living in your dream house
Taking amazing vacations
Driving your perfect car, and anything else that you wish to attract into your life. By doing this on a regular basis you will end up drawing new images into your mind and through the repetition of this practise you will begin to overwrite negative beliefs with positive ones.

To turbo charge the power of visualizing, try to feel and attach strong, positive emotions to the pictures that you are visualizing. Allow the feelings of love, appreciation and happiness to captivate you as though you are truly having these experiences. Your subconscious mind will never discriminate between whats real and what is not and will absorb the messages as if they’re 100% real! This is the true beauty of visualization – the power to bypass limiting messages and focus on pleasing images, all of which are being absorbed right into your subconscious to be called upon later.

Affirmations are an extremely effective way to install positive messages into your subconscious. They work best if you follow some basic guidelines. The first is to always word your affirmations positively and in a present tense such as. "I am confident and able and achieve my goals" Your subconscious is completely present tense orientated and will not compute future tense. In other words, Your subconscious only recognises the current moment.

Another basic principle is to always try to match the corresponding feelings. for example, If you say "I am healthy, wealthy and happy" while feeling unhealthy, unwealthy and unhappy, you would be sending conflicting messages to your subconscious. Whatever affirmations you are using you need to absolutely strive to match the emotions to the best of your ability. Your subconscious will then be far more likely to believe it.

The next thing to bear in mind is repetition! Affirmations simply will not work if you just say them once, twice or three times. You must use them as often as you possibly can for them to be accepted into your subconscious and for new beliefs to be formed from them.

There are many other methods such as brain wave technology, certain forms of meditation, hypnosis and many others, but I will get into these methods in detail in future articles.
