Sometime during the late 1850s to the early 1860s, a new sport was introduced as a spinoff of soccer. In this game, instead of kicking the ball to move it closer to the goal, it was passed around by hand until a player can physically touch the ball to the ground at the goal zone. This game was continuously developed until it reached the point of what is known these days as modern rugby.

Originally from England, rugby has made a mark in several other countries as well, including Ireland, France, and South Africa. Australia and New Zealand have also developed a passion for the sport. It is said that the popularity of rugby across nations is due in part to the fact that many countries came under British colonial rule. Along with their customs and traditions, the British also passed on their affinity for the game of rugby.

However, although rugby is widely recognized internationally, it is still not a common sport in the United States. Unlike American football – which is actually a descendant of rugby – that has legions of fans all over the country, the number of American rugby followers and players is relatively small. Media coverage of the sport is also not as extensive as those of other sports.

Despite this, though, it seems that the rest of the world is celebrating the popularity of rugby all the same. The most recent World Cup has drawn much attention from both spectators and investors alike. Because of this rising popularity, there are many people who want to qualify for a national rugby league club to get a chance to play in the international finals.

The popularity of the sport is not limited to men’s rugby alone. There are also many women and children who belong to an official rugby league club that competes with other clubs in their areas. Rugby for women and children are continuously gaining popularity and recognition next to its traditional counterpart.

It can be said that the future is quite bright for rugby, especially since more people are discovering it and more corporate investors are willing to pitch in. Even in the United States, there has been a significant increase in the number of men and women who want to join a rugby league club. At this rate, it won’t be long before the rest of the world catches up with the rugby craze.
