Fashion has become an integral part of life and you can see it pretty much everywhere. Everyone enjoys fashion because it can help you look your best and give your confidence a good and solid boost. For a long time, there was only mainstream and traditional commercial fashion that existed, but overtime, the concept of alte ative clothing has also emerged. This is considered a rather modern concept and the aim of this kind of fashion is to stand out and be able to express yourself. Therefore, alte ative fashion tends to manifests itself as eye-grabbing, quirky and artistic style clothing that can be both useful and simple.

There are different styles and types of alte ative clothing to be found and each of them encompasses different genres. Some of the prominent types of alte ative fashion styles that you will come across are:

  • Goth

People from the goth culture prefer this style of alte ative fashion and it has influences from the Elizabethan and Victorian era. Gothic fashion mostly comprises of black pieces of clothing that has tinges of purple or scarlet. Some of the other accessories that are also worn include corsets, fishnets and laces. This type of alte ative fashion style can also be easily distinguished due to the style of makeup, which usually includes pale white faces with black lips and black eyeliner.

  • Punk

Punk culture had its beginnings in the 1970s and from the get go, it expressed its disdain for mainstream media. Therefore, this type of alte ative fashion is all about bending and breaking the rules. Some of the staple items of punk clothing include ripped jeans, leather jackets, studded jackets and an array of boots. Mohawks and short hairstyles also gained popularity in punk culture with dramatic and heavy makeup looks.

  • Steampunk

Another popular style of alte ative fashion is steampunk, which includes some elements of the Victorian era and combines these with a few elements from the industrial revolution that was a bit overt in its clothing. This includes color schemes as well as accessories. The typical steampunk outfits you will come across will range in a color scheme of cream and brown with red accents. Brown leather corsets are paired with white frilly blouses and long frilly dark colored skirts, completing the look with Victorian style boots. Some of the accessories that are included with this fashion style are iconic brass goggles and distressed top hats in brown.

  • Grunge

During the 1990s, the grunge style rose to popularity and was inspired by music icons like Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain. Plain or graphic tees, a plaid shirt and ripped or skinny jeans are part of grunge fashion. You can pair these with Converse, iconic boots from Doc Martens or some other combat boots can also work well.   • Bohemian

In the 1960s, boho fashion was developed as a way of revolting against the government or mainstream media. This alte ative fashion style is carefree and effortless and most staple clothing include flowy shirts or dresses with frilly designs. During this period, headbands gained a lot of popularity.   • Hipster

This term had been originally coined in the 1990s, but it was during the 2000s that the hipster fashion grew in popularity. It consisted of young adults who were living an alte ative lifestyle and shunning the mainstream ideologies. Hipster fashion has become one of the most well-renowned alte ative fashion styles. One of the most notable pieces in this style are none other than skinny jeans, along with plaids, square-framed glasses and checks.

  • Lolita

Heavily influenced by the Edwardian and Victorian styles of kid's clothing, Lolita is a type of alte ative fashion that can be divided into three substyles; classic, sweet and goth. However, the cute aesthetic is the primary distinction of Lolita. The frilly dresses along with the puffy skirts are considered its staple clothing items.

  • Soft grunge

Soft grunge originated in the 2010s and its popularity increased from the website tumble. There were influences from feminine and grunge fashion and it is all about contrasting, mixing elements from both these styles. Items such as ripped jeans, denim shorts, floral dresses, plaid shirts and shoes like doc martens and creepers are worn popularly.

  • Cybergoth

Cybergoth is a combination of raver, goth and rivet head and even though the outfits are standard goth, it is the accessories that make them different as they are in stark contrast. Plus, cybergoth also boasts futuristic influences and leans more towards EDM.
