It may seem boring to say that you've been to the library, until you go there. Here are just some of the many reasons why you should take a few minutes to pick up a library card.

Nowadays entertainment is a constant part of life. If we aren't being entertained, we typically are wondering why not and are devising ways to be entertained again. Cell phones, tablets, video game systems and TV's are all wired to provide us with almost anything we want and it's easy to escape to another state of mind. From blasting aliens in a far away galaxy, to watching celebrities dance with two left feet and even reading the latest top romance novels, with all of these entertaining outlets, who needs a library card anymore? Well it's not as boring as the popular stigma would suggest. While cuts to education and city budgets have greatly reduced a lot of public services, including library systems, the gradual improvement of the economy as well as many well wishing community groups, have helped to keep the essential libraries alive and well.

First off, while the Dewey Decimal system is in use, it's long since been digitized and books are just as searchable as anything on the internet. The internet is completely accessible and most larger public libraries have a bank of at least a dozen computers where you can browse the web, scan, print and more. This is especially helpful for those of us who don't relish the idea of spending a chunk of cash to take care of business needs in copy/print stores that charge for time on a computer as well as two or three times the amount per page printed. While bookstores have largely disappeared, moving on line to do most of their sales, the library, as it has always done, offers the option of borrowing a book that you would probably be spending $15 to $25 or more for without even knowing for sure if you'll like it. A good library system is well connected and any book not at your local library can be ordered and shipped there from any other library in the system. Generally, all of the latest books are there so if you are curious about the latest top romance novels that are making all of the headlines on the New York Bestsellers list, go ahead and get a library card. All you need is an ID that shows that you are a resident of that particular county and about 5 minutes to sign up.

Now you might say, “I don't read paper books anymore. I have an e-reader!” Not a problem. Libraries, especially school and university libraries, have caught up with the times to offer many of the titles in electronic form. A simple timed download that expires after a certain amount of time can be yours free of charge just like a regular book. It's also a snap to renew your book. Just go online, create an account and you will instantly have access to all of the books in the network. When it comes time for your borrowing period to expire, just click renew to be allotted another term or two. Want to learn another language? The price of language tutorial software is astronomical if you purchase it, but it's completely and totally free at your local public library.

With all of these benefits, you can see why it would make sense to grab a library card. Action, adventure, education, top romance novels, fabulous fantasy or science fiction can all be at your fingertips with a simple trip to the library.
