Symptoms of Type II Diabetes

Diabetes is medical condition a person has high blood sugar. This could be due to less production of Insulin or insulin resistance by the body. High blood sugar could result into polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia.

Type 2 diabetes is caused due to insulin resistance in the body of the patient. Insulin resistance is a condition in which body cels fail to respond to the insulin produced by the body. Insuline is a hormone produced by pamcreas, which controls level of sugar in the blood. Body fails to make use of insulin and results in insuline deficiency. It is also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
Symptoms of Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes may remain undiagnosed for a long time. A person may not be aware for years that he has type 2 diabetes, as symptoms may not be quite pronounced. A patient with type 2 diabetes has greater risk of developing hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome. Type 2 diabetes could lead to many health complications such as kidney failure, heart disease, blindness and nerve damage. Steroid and stress are stimulants of type 2 diabetes. But if a patient finds more than two or three of following symptoms, he may be suffering from Type II diabetes. It is better to go for tests to be confirmed about it.

Increased fatigue- A patient suffering from type 2 diabetes suffers from increased fatigue or tiredness. This is due to inability of cells to metabolize glucose, thus there is a lack of energy. It causes persistent tiredness.
Excessive thirst- Ppatient feels excessive thirst or Polydipsia due to increase in concentration of glucose in the blood. It leads to signaling the brain about need of its dilution, thus urge to drink water increases.
Polyuria: As the level of glucose increases in the body, body tries to get rid of it through urine. Thus it increases urine production and thus patient feels Polyuria or frequent need of urination. It could also lead to dehydration due to excretion of large amount of water.
Excessive hunger- Patient feels excessive hunger or Polyphegia. Reason behind this is that body tries to control the sugar level by producing more insulin, which leads to hunger pangs.
Sudden weight loss- Patient suffer sudden weight loss due to changes in metabolism. Due to factors like polyuria, glucosuria, body tries to maintain the energy level by using body fat and protein leading to sudden weight loss.
Weight Gain- Some patients may experience weight gain due to polyphegia or excessive hunger.
Blurred vision- Type 2 Diabetes could lead to Hyperosmolar hyperglycemia nonketotic syndrome. In this medical condition body fluid is drained out of tissues including lenses of the eye. It leads to blurred vision and even in blindness in some patients.
Irritability- Due to high level of blood sugar patients of Type 2 Diabetes feel irritable. There is an inefficient glucose supply to the brain and other body organs. It leads to tiredness, uneasiness and irritability.
Numbness- Patients may feel numbness or tingling in the hands and feet. It is due to one of the diabetes symptoms called peripheral neuropathy.
Infections- Patients of type 2 Diabetes are more prone to infections. They may suffer skin infections due to fluctuation in sugar levels. Woman patients may suffer from recurrent yeast infections due to weak immune function. Patients may also develop infection of genitals and frequent urinary tract infections.
Slow and poor wound healing- There is slow and poor wound healing in patients of type 2 diabetes due to high blood sugar level. High blood sugar interferes with resists the flourishing of WBC, thus leading to weakening of immune system. Thus wound healing is slow. Prolonged type 2 diabetes also leads to thickening of blood vessels causing poor circulation of blood.
Dry skin- Patients may also experience dryness of skin and itching on skin due to peripheral neuropathy. It could also adversly affect blood circulation and sweat gland function.
Altered mental status- Patients of type 2 diabetes may experience agitation, lack of attention, extreme lethargy, or confusion due to high sugar level in the blood. Patients may develop ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar hyperglycemia nonketotic syndrome, or hypoglycemia (low sugar).
