Reasons People Contemplate Suicide

Suicide is basically a way out of an extremely painful situation where people don’t see any hope.

According to human needs psychology and specifically The 6 Human Needs, people contemplate suicide because they incorrectly believe that they can’t get their most important needs met.

People’s deepest need is love/connection. Most people who feel suicidal when they falsely believe that nobody can possibly love them. That’s one of the reasons why people commit suicide after a break-up.

Why Do Men Commit Suicide More Than Woman?

There’s no one concrete answer, however an answer is that most men value the human need of significance over love/connection. Most men are taught that they have to be good providers and high achievers, and receive love/connection for it.

These men wrongly put in their heads that they have to succeed, achieve, and provide in order to be worthy enough to deserve love. If a man loses his job and has trouble financially supporting himself or his family, he may feel insignificant. For some men, insignificance means a loss of love which is difficult to bear.

Believing that we have to be significant enough to receive love is the cause of most depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. This pressure is also one of the reasons why we hear many stories of students who take their own lives due to the enormous pressure they and their parents put on them.
