Guru means one who sheds light on our path. When we get stuck or are lost in any situation, it is the Guru who guides us in the right direction. Neither worldly knowledge nor spiritual knowledge can be attained without a Living Guru, who can show us our mistakes, guide us how to come out of those mistakes and can make us progress in life. Therefore, whoever intends to progress, does require a Guru until the very end, until he achieves salvation.

On the other hand, a true disciple is the one who, with utmost humility and highest sincerity, grasps everything that the Guru has to teach him.
Now, if we want to progress spiritually, we need a spiritual Guru and we ought to become a good disciple too. So look for a good Guru and make such a person your Guru, who wins your heart, makes you happy, and with whom you will feel peaceful forever.

Once we select our Guru, it is in our own interest to:
●Have faith in Him.
●Follow His words with enthusiasm.
●Not see any faults in Him.
●Refrain from speaking or thinking bad about Him.
●Remain sincere to Him.

This should not be difficult as it is we who designate one as our Guru; and not the other way round. It is important to adhere to His advice, or else how will we benefit and make further progress on our path? Of what use it is to have someone as Guru, if we do not make any benefit or progress? Therefore, in order to reach our goal, we must do all we can to follow the advice of our spiritual Guru.

In case we have not understood His advice, rather than following it blindly or unwillingly, we can always check with Him and keep asking until we understand His advice correctly. Our earnest effort to follow His advice rightly will make us progress leaps and bounds.

Why should we follow Guru’s advice with sincerity?
●We do not lose our way.
●We receive His blessings, which further help us in our efforts on our path of spiritual progress.
●We make a speedy progress towards our goal.
●Our worldly life goes smoother.
●The stronger our faith, the better results we yield.

How can we ever forget the grace of Guru?!
If differences occur, do not allow those differences in. Never harness negative feelings towards Him or turn your back on Him after making him a Guru. For some reason, if we reach a point where we are not agreeable with any of the advices of our Guru, and we feel He is not proving helpful to us in attaining our goal in any way, we can part with Him on amicable terms. But to harbour negative thoughts for Him or speak poor about Him is a very wrong thing to do. Doing so, we curb our own spiritual development; and we could even descend into a lower life form. After parting too, one should not speak ill of the Guru. And by mistake, if we happen to, we must immediately ask for forgiveness for this mistake of ours, from God.

Whose interference does not allow us to follow our Guru’s advice with sincerity?
One’s own intellect causes interference and does not allow us to follow the advice given by Guru. Therefore, first and foremost, one should surrender his intellect in the feet of his Guru and become like a child, who does not need to do or worry about anything, as everything is taken care of by his mother / Guru.

Surrendering is like joining two tanks of water with a pipe, such that gradually the other tank too will bear the same level of water in course of time. When we surrender, we attain the energies of our Guru. Such is the power of surrender of our ego and intellect in the lotus feet of our revered Guru!!!
