I think that our level of Self-love is one of, if not the most important aspect to our personal and spiritual growth. If we focus on that one area alone we will find that all other areas in our lives, from money to our relationships to our over all happiness and success will improve drastically. Not only that but when we nurture our relationship with Self we are simultaneously nurturing our relationship with God/Spirit.

Self-Love and God

Me: Why is self-love so important anyway?

God: Let me answer you by asking a question. Do you love Me?

Me: Are you kidding?

God: No, I couldn’t be more serious. Do you love me?

Me (with incredulity) Of course I love you, God.

God: Do you love you?

Me: That’s harder God. Sometimes I’m short tempered. Sometimes I’m scared and confused and sometimes I don’t do the right thing. But God, you’re always loving, understanding, peaceful, healing.

God: (interrupting) What you call fear, confusion and anger is an illusion. Only I am real and the only way you can truly love me, Michelle, is to love YOU, for I am you. You are the expression of Me as You.

Self-Love

Our level of self-love is based on our own self-concept. What is a concept, but nothing more than something thought or imagined. A concept is not true unless we make it so. It is in our power to shift, adjust and radically transform our self concept. Transforming our self concept transforms our world.

Our natural state is self-love. Self-love is knowing that the God-force lives through us, that we are the Power and Presence of God. This is not self-indulgent because true self love recognized the same in all of life.

Self-Love and Conceit and Selfishness

So many of my clients express a fear that if they love themselves they will become conceited or selfish, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Selfishness is the manifestation of fear, the fear of not being enough, not having enough and/or not getting enough. Self love is love for the self. When we love ourselves first we have more love to offer and we actually tap into the abundance of love and all good things. But we must first fill our own well. A full well is loving and patient, an empty well is angry and resentful. You are the only one that can fill your well. It is simply impossible for anyone else to do this.

Conceit is insecurity or the fear that everyone else is better than me, which then manifests as an attempt to convince everyone else that I am better than them. Self love can see the beauty and worthiness in others all the while still recognizing it in oneself. There is no competition as we are all One and we are all expressions of God.
