There are many different methods to find relief for back pain, mostly passive, non-invasive methods such as taking vitamins and other supplements or actively changing your lifestyle to one that is more active. The very basic being getting a bed that supports your back and getting plenty of regular exercise and sleep. Relieving your back pain is not a complicated science, it's mostly just a matter of finding and consistently using effective techniques that work for your individual situation.

The first, and probably the easiest, form of relief for back pain to consider is the use of topical creams. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in spicy chili peppers, and is an excellent way to instantly treat back pain. As it is applied to the skin, capsaicin depletes what is called "substance P," which is a neurochemical that transmits pain. For this reason, capsaicin causes an analgesic effect. These creams are available over the counter in drug stores and even in groceries and other such health food stores.

Balnero therapy is one of the most ancient therapies used as a means of relief for back pain. "Balneo" is derived from the Latin "balneum" which means bath. Thus, it is a form of hydrotherapy wherein the patient bathes in mineral water, usually warmed. Medical studies have shown that bathing in mineral water compared to plain water is much more effective in relieving pain. It has been found that water containing sulphur was very effective in reducing pain and improving the mobility of the patient.

Another very good method for relief of back pain would massage therapy. Massages have become very popular as they have been found to reduce anxiety and depression, which are associated with chronic pain. Likewise, chiropractors would be a good choice to relieve pain. Chiropractors manipulate the spine to restore joint mobility. They use methods such as applying controlled forces to joints that have become restricted, resulting in the reliease of tightness which encourages healing.

A slightly more invasive method than massage therapy is acupuncture. Modern acupuncture stems from traditional Chinese medicine, which says that pain results from blocked energy along the energy pathways of the body. Acupuncture inserts needles into these pathways to unblock the flow of energy. Scientifically, acupuncture releases opioids which are naturally pain-relieving. These opioids send signals that calm the sympathetic nervous system, releasing neurochemicals and hormones that aid in relief for back pain.

Slightly more invasive than acupuncture is a procedure called prolotherapy. Prolotherapy relieves back pain by addressing damaged ligaments in the back. After an injury, sometimes connective tissue in the back does not heal completely, which leads the spine to become less stable, which in turn causes pain. Prolotherapy addresses this with the injection of a liquid solution into the ligaments and tendons of the affected area. The liquid causes inflammation which triggers the body's natural healing response to repair the tissue. Unlike drugs, which tend to just numb the pain, prolotherapy is seen as fixing the underlying problem.
