Regardless of the subject being discussed across the world these days there are always differences in opinions. What may reduce cancer risk is always debatable, but let’s look at what a few studies can show us and allow a little sun light to eliminate a relatively dark path.
Researchers from the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego found that by naturally stimulating the production of vitamin D in the skin significantly reduces the risk of 16 different types of cancer. The one way they found that the vitamin D production is naturally stimulated is by solar ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation.
One of the researcher’s notes in the study that one of the single most important things we can do to reduce the risk of cancer other then stop smoking or consuming alcohol is to enhance our vitamin D status.
Working outdoors can have a twofold beneficial effect for reducing the risk of developing melanoma…
• Individuals develop a tan and that tan helps block the penetration of ultraviolet radiation reducing free radicals that could lead to melanoma.
• A lot of Vitamin D is produced
It is recommended that individuals expose themselves to natural sunlight to get their vitamin D.
If you live in a warm and sunny region of the county exposing ones chest, back and arms (10 to 20 percent of your body) for 20 minutes around 12:00 noon can produce about 1,500 IU of vitamin D.
The study also states that it is best for people to expose more of their skins surface for a shorter period of time rather than stay in the sun longer with less skin exposed.
The researchers further noted that fairer skinned individuals need to stay in the sun four times less time then darker skinned individuals to receive the same amount of Vitamin D absorption.
The study goes on to recommend that we keep moving while in the sun and to always wear a hat to avoid prolonged sun exposure. Avoiding more than 20 minutes per day since the skin produces sufficient vitamin D within this time frame is also recommended.
