With internet banking facilities now as familiar to some current account holders as those available on high street cash machines, it seems as if the web continues to change the way we live our daily lives.

If you aren’t one of these people, there are all manner of things secure online banking offers that you may be missing out on. Perhaps the most obvious of these is having being fast, convenient access to your account 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether it's viewing or downloading statements, checking your balance in real time, managing standing orders and Direct Debits, or transferring money, you could find the option changes the way you bank.

However, for some, the stigma attached to having their financial details connected to an online facility brings with it some apprehension. But as many experts have pointed out, online bank accounts are now equipped with all manner of security functions in order to make using them as safe as possible.

According to Bank Safe Online, a site set up by the UK Payments Administration, there is no reason to fear the web as a means to manage your money. The group states that internet banking is both "safe and convenient" and urges the public to use it with confidence. However, it adds common sense should prevail and the public would do well to guard against unsolicited emails and other ways in which criminals might attempt to get you to willingly offer up your account details.

The organisation recommends taking some basic steps to keep your computer protected against threats that include keeping anti-virus software up-to-date, checking for malicious files, installing a personal firewall and generally being wary of any messages you receive asking you to provide personal or financial information.

Other tips offered by the group include making sure your web browser is displaying a locked padlock or unbroken key symbol when using internet banking, checking your bank's web address begins with 'https' as this means the connection is secure and the site has been accessed by directly being typed in to the address bar - rather than from a link in an email.

Those looking to set up online banking might also want to consider Lloyds TSB's ID Aware facility, which helps you protect against identity theft and fraud even further. For £6.99 per month, the user can closely monitor their credit profile, receive notifications when any changes are made to it and receive unlimited access to your report online or by post. This includes a quarterly credit statement and a team of dedicated specialists who will help should any fraudulent activity take place.

So, if you are sensible with your data and are keeping your computer equipped with the latest software, you should find you are able to enjoy the benefits of online banking without worry. This means moving money around, paying bills and applying for credit cards, savings accounts and loans are just a few clicks away at any given time.
