Wellness in general means a healthy balance of mind, body, and spirit resulting in a feeling of well-being. Physiologic wellness on the other hand pertains more to health, which according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” It does seem similar but wellness is a subjective feeling. Only you can tell somebody if you are well or not.
On this note, many factors affect wellness. Your lifestyle, your age, and even your family can affect how “well” you feel. Many get sick because they are emotionally traumatized from a breakup or are scolded by their parents. You feel down and eventually come down with the flu. But most of the time, we get sick because of physical factors such as bacteria, viruses, pollution, and our own lifestyle. A lifestyle of constantly playing games hunched over the computer or being a couch potato on your sofa can get you sick. On the other hand, perhaps it is your occupation that requires you to spend long hours in front of the computer and to find a comfortable position, you slouch over to relieve the stress. Some of the afflictions that can affect you because of this can include back pain, slipped disc, and stiff neck. These are only some of the illnesses that chiropractic medicine addresses.
Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine wherein the spine and its nerves are the center of diagnosis and treatment of a patient’s condition. It addresses many neuromuscular illnesses that commonly hound us day to day. Chiropractic treats these problems using hand manipulation to realign bones to its correct position. Why bones? According to chiropractic medicine, deviations in spinal alignment cause a host of problems ranging from numbness to pain. Definitely, chronic back pain or stiff neck will keep you from getting that “well” status.
In simple terms, chiropractic aims to realign bones to where it is supposed to be. When bones are misaligned, they tend to compress on nerves causing pain, numbness, paralysis, and a host of other problems. To alleviate those problems, chiropractors apply light to strong pressure on bones depending on the ailment. After several sessions, the bones would have already realigned relieving your pressed nerves.
Something else that chiropractic promotes, and mainstream medicine too, is exercise. Good old fashioned exercise strengthens back muscles to support your bones and avoid them getting misaligned. Good old fashioned exercise also complements chiropractic which also improves circulation and breathing. It helps reduce fat, blood pressure, and a host of other things. Simply put, good old fashioned exercise is good for everyone.
Achieving physiologic wellness is a multi-targeted approach. There are some things that mainstream medicine is better at curing. There are some things that chiropractic medicine is better too. Either way, you have to make a conscious effort to stay healthy. You have to be vigilant about your health because it is our health that keeps us doing the things that we love, not money, not cars, not fame. Read More
