I work with many people of various ages, backgrounds, belief systems and cultures. The one prominent common denominator in those who are able to make a shift into wellness is an understanding of personal responsibility. Individuals who can embrace and recognize their behavioral responsibilities in life to themselves and those around them are a step ahead in the awareness that can facilitate healing.

The key cognitive process is the understanding that one’s life, one’s being, has an impact. One’s thoughts and choices create ripple effects essentially able to affect change in a positive or negative manner over one’s own life as well as other people, situations, and events. It is a powerful awareness and truth that is a core foundation in self-healing. In psychology, those who operate from this belief have what is called an internal locus of control. There is an awareness that good and bad shall both occur in life, and those with an internal locus of control successfully detach from events, stepping into their personal power to make choices as to how to react and respond. Alternately there are those who have a more fatalistic view of life, believing that life just happens to them and there is very little they can do to impact or shape the outcome. Those who live with this perspective have an external locus of control. They often have a feeling of being helpless and/or victimized. Not surprisingly, this disposition is highly correlated with depressive disorders and chronic illness. The fact is, we all have positive and negative events in our lives, and it is through the choices we make—the way in which we perceive and choose to react to those events—that we encounter the opportunity to impact our lives for the better, or to create more problems and negativity in our lives.

Personal responsibility is not the same as self-blame, and the ensuing feelings of guilt those who practice self-blame internalize. Those who are often in self-blame take personal responsibility to the negative extreme, believing that most unfortunate things happening in their lives or around their lives always have something to do with them personally. A self-blamer tends to believe that if he or she were only “a better person” negative events and unfortunate circumstances would not take place or exist. This is a core belief that can be rather toxic to the pursuit of a fulfilling and empowered life. It is what I consider a “foundational flaw”—a crack in the early foundational structure of an individual’s self esteem which can literally disrupt one’s ability to move forward with a powerful presence and sense of purpose in life. It is akin to trying to build a castle upon quicksand.

As a Medical Intuitive I am frequently able to discern illness, and to connect that illness or condition to life events, traumas, and beliefs. I am often asked whether I believe we are responsible for all of our illnesses and diseases. My answer is that I truly believe we are at least partially responsible, oftentimes to a greater degree than we can imagine. Illness and disease can be attributed to more than the toxins in our environment, genetics, lack of exercise or what foods we eat. All of these factors play a role, but the level to which they influence health is dependent on more of the psychological, emotional and “mystical” aspects of life. Amazing improvements in physical health have come to those willing to face some of their deepest personal, emotional and spiritual challenges. It is something I bear witness to on a regular basis in my practice.

Illness and discomfort are signals that something is “out of whack” in the body. However, by “body” I am referring to any or all three components that make up our human experience—physical, mental, (emotional/psychological) and spiritual. We feel and function our best when all of these aspects are in alignment. We have far more control over our health and wellness on all of these levels than we believe or have been intentionally or unintentionally led to believe. There is a strong symbolic correlation between many illnesses and life events, issues, traumas and psychological processes.
