You must have faced obstacles in your life time. I can safely say that every single human being on the face of this planet would have faced obstacles in their lives, and will face obstacles in the future.

Sometimes we tend to exaggerate what an obstacle is, and we may get disempowered in the process. Firstly, let’s have a look at what an obstacle is. For some people, an obstacle is a blockage, a road block, a hurdle, or it is something which they put in the ‘too hard’ basket. For others, an obstacle is an opportunity, a challenge, or a rewarding experience.

What does an obstacle do to us? It can slow us down, it can make us get side-tracked, it can challenge us, it can bring out the best in us, it can make us stronger, and it can make us wiser. These are just some simple examples.
Whenever we are faced with an obstacle, we must be aware enough to realise that an obstacle is there for a reason, and we must find that reason. Maybe it is there to make us realise our potential, or maybe it is there to test our will! Whatever the reason may be, we must always remind ourselves that the obstacle does not mean that we will not make progress.

If I could share a personal experience with you, I would tell you that I faced many obstacles during the journey of releasing my book. At times, it was overwhelming when I realised how many obstacles were in the way. What I did was constantly remind myself that these obstacles can only stop me if I chose to allow them to stop me!

So, here are some simple insights on overcoming obstacles:

• Remind yourself that you do have choices – sometimes we may think that an obstacle is an end of the road, it is not! You have the liberty to make conscious choices on what you can do, in regards to overcoming the obstacle. You can give up and walk away, or you can act from a point of empowerment, and overcome the obstacle. The choice is always in your good hands!

• Seek help and ask for guidance– in most cases, you are not alone when it comes to facing an obstacle. Reach out to others for their support, even if they can give you moral support, it will surely make a positive difference. When I was faced with obstacles before releasing my book, my publisher/book mentor, Keith Leon (www.bakeyourbook.com)was of invaluable support to me. This made me realise the value of having a support network around me when I am facing an obstacle.

• Think creatively– when facing an obstacle, you will need to change or adjust your ‘game plan’. Creative thinking can be done by anyone! Think ‘outside the square’ and let your creative energy find solution on how to overcome the obstacle. Do some brain storming and come up with new ideas that you may not have considered in the past. As Albert Einstein quoted “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking that we used to create them?” So, you must have a shift in your mindset, in order to overcome the obstacle. I use the process of writing. I will write a question, along the lines of “What steps do I need to take in order to overcome this obstacle?” Then I will list all the answers that come to my mind!

• Keep your eyes on the prize - remind yourself of the reward that you will receive after overcoming the obstacle. Mentally and emotionally engage yourself as already having received your reward for overcoming that obstacle! Operate from that point, and you will feel empowered enough to overcome the obstacle. If you think like a winner, you will act like a winner!

• Learn, learn, and learn– obstacles are great teachers. They teach you valuable lessons about yourself, about life in general, and about obstacles of course. Use the experience gained in overcoming an obstacle in other areas of your life. Share your insights with others so that they apply your insights when they are facing obstacles. Overcoming an obstacle is an experience that will carry you forward! So, when the next obstacle comes, you will know better, and you will be better prepared!

To sum up, please always remember that no obstacle ever is bigger or stronger than you are! So, the next time that you are facing an obstacle, please keep repeating these words “I am stronger and wiser than this obstacle. Hence I will get over it!" Verbally repeating such statements will remind you of your capabilities in overcoming obstacles.
