On Stage…Off Stage

Ok.

It’s time for the big meeting.

Straighten your tie.

Check your hair.

Take a deep breath.

On goes the biggest smile and…

“Hello there! How are you today…”

And you’re off and running.

Ever seen this before?

Ever been this before?

It’s like your Clark Kent and you just changed into your tights and cape, and now it’s time to be the best you can be.

The problem is…

There is no phone booth, your clothes don’t change, and you certainly don’t get to fly!

An even bigger change is that the people around you SEE you make this change and become someone else.

Thinking, “that’s odd.”

“I’ve never seen Jonathan act like THAT before.”

Whether it’s a different style of humor, a change that makes you more on task, or dressing to the nines for the “Mr. Big” that’s coming in…

People notice.

Somewhere along the line, we were all taught to “put you best foot forward” or “make a good impression”.

I think that’s all a bunch of BS! Hog Wash! And worst of all…FAKE!

There really is no such thing as being “off stage”.

You are always “on stage”.

You are always in the spotlight.

The people around (while not really watching you under a microscope) CERTAINLY see when you make changes to yourself or try to be someone else to others.

It’s the same reason that you never pick your nose while you’re driving.

You may THINK that you are alone.

But really you never know who is passing you in the opposite lane ?

People can ALWAYS see you.

So what if you (or the people around you) don’t like who you are?

First, I want to mention that what others think of you, is none of your business.

That’s right. Who Cares!

You are who you are and to heck with everyone else

But…

If you find that you don’t like who you are

Or want to make a change.

Make the change long term.

Become the person you want to be.

ALL THE TIME!

Don’t be one person when you alone, another when your with your spouse, another when you’re in a staff meeting and then a different person all together when you meet with a client.

PEOPLE NOTICE!

And not only do they notice, but they also take note.

They take note that you might treat others better than you treat them.

This leads to resentment, suspicion, and distrust.

Think about it this way…

If people thought of you one way, then you act differently toward others.

How would they ever know when you are being you?

Better yet, how would they know when you are being honest?

Bottom line… Be yourself!

ALL THE TIME!

You are great the way you are.

Have the confidence that others will think as good of you as you do of yourself.

And if they don’t then stay away from them…it’s their loss.

Be yourself!

ALL THE TIME!

Enjoy!
