“Genius is patience.”~ Sir Isaac Newton. I decided to bone up on some science and was reminded of Newton’s Laws of Motion. Since these are absolute laws, I challenge you to use them as filters for how your business is going.
First Law of Motion- An object that is not moving won’t move unless something moves it. If your business is stagnant, you may not be putting enough effort, energy to activity toward it to make it move. I see this problem in my coaching practice so often. Part-time entrepreneurs who have a business, but don’t really work their business are baffled that they don’t have any business. It’s not going to move, unless you do something to move it. Putting up a website will not cause clients to beat down your door. It takes inertia!
Second Law of Motion- Objects move in the direction of force. The more force is used, the faster an object will go. This one is the basis for momentum. If you want to build momentum keep working your business. Think about it like climbing a hill. At the beginning, the effort seems to make small, almost imperceptible progress, but then, all of the sudden, things pick up and your business gets some momentum and you can see progress much faster.
Third Law of Motion- For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Like bouncing a ball against a wall, when you hit a barrier, the ball will bounce back. This law only applies when you have hit a barrier. So, let’s say that you keep trying something in your business and it’s not working. In fact, it seems to set you back. But, you keep doing it, because you always have. That’s the definition of insanity right? Are you surprised when the basketball comes back at you when you hit the wall? Of course not. The same should be true for your business strategies. If you are hitting a wall, turn. Try something else. Change your course so that you aren’t hitting that same obstacle.
So, to keep business momentum going, you have to work your business steadily. And, when you hit an obstacle redirect your efforts. Learn from your mistakes and keep going. I love our opening quote from Sir Isaac Newton, “Genius is patience.” These laws of motion are like a dance for your business. Patiently learn how to use your efforts as a force for your business and you will find yourself making some forward momentum.
