Well that is good question to examine. The answers vary from the obvious to the ridiculous and even the paranoid. This article will provide the reader with my take on “What Is The  Network Marketing Business Model”.
Let's start with the obvious, Network Marketing is the growing of ones own business allowing everyday people to have the opportunity to control their financial destinies by helping others to do the same. That sounds good to me, I'm in.
Next, we'll look at the ridiculous. The fabled”...it's a pyramid scheme” used as the full frontal attack when confronted with the eager marketer and his opportunity. This tends to be enough to ward off the inexperienced and the timid. Also, the ridiculous notion that unless you started the deal that all the money goes to the top and leaves those on the lower levels broke or making just enough to pay for all the products you have to inventory.
An oldie but a goodie is the paranoid responses that range from either being a religious cult or an illegal ponzi scheme. Normally these are just unrealistic objections rising from fear of getting rooked or maybe a bad experience in mlm, usually stemming from a particular upline( been there) ,or someone close did and thus creating their perception of the whole industry as negative.
While all of these examples have a modicum of merit, my view and what I try to explain to my new prospects, customers and distributors is this; Network Marketing is an alternative to conventional retail sales by which corporations sell products to consumers by word of mouth advertising (Direct Sales) in lieu of commercial media.
Of course, here is the Wikipedia description; Multilevel marketing (MLM) is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of the other salespeople that they recruit. This recruited sales force is referred to as the participant's "downline", and can provide multiple levels of compensation. More information can be found by following this link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_marketing
By doing this, companies can pay independent distributors instead of big media giants, this is way more cost effective for start ups who could otherwise not afford to participate with  corporate giants . These companies opt to pay out the ad dollars to distributors. That is great for us. Unfortunately by not being on the big screen TV, our products are subject to being referred to and perceived as inferior due to lack of stature in the over marketed public eye.
As Network Marketers, this is where resistance comes from in our prospects. Also, this is why the attrition rate in our industry is so high. People get excited and fired up to get in but when they realize they don't know how to overcome the objections leaving them with overwhelming feelings of rejection they then fade away. This is a sad reality, we lose so many promising talented people because the ones who got them excited to get in also chased them away because they themselves were not able to overcome the same objections.
I encourage you to invest in yourself and learn the craft of Network Marketing, so that when they throw out the cliched homilies mentioned above, you will be equipped with the knowledgeable tools to overcome those types of objections as well as others. This will make you more valuable  and marketable, as you will be the expert, people will begin to trust you more and will be more likely to join with you.
