MORE ABOUT RECOGNIZING THE INNER CRITIC

If you are thinking too much and circling an issue and thoughts are going round and round in your head and you feel there is no escape. CHANCES ARE the Inner Critic has you in his grasp.

If there is a voice saying, Don’t be - too loud too quiet - too soft too hard - too fat too thin - too smart too dumb. It’s there’s an Inner Critic in your head. .

One of the favorite words of the Critic or Gremlin is
appropriateness, because society stresses how important to be appropriate.
Whatever that means!
Oh, I almost forgot – the importance of being perfect.
We all know that one!
Of course, Be Perfect, BUT by whose standards??

WHAT TO DO IF A GREMLIN SHOWS UP:

You can argue with it. Unfortunately, arguing takes up a lot of energy and it is unlikely you will win, because our mind is slippery, cunning and very tenacious. My critical mind has the biggest teeth I’ve ever seen once it has taken hold.

Yet, I’ve noticed with my Inner Critic does not like to be ignored so instead I will send him on a mission. I will say to him in a gentle soothing voice, after a particularly bad bout of Gremlinitis, that I appreciate all the hard work he’s done on my behalf in the last few hours – days – weeks – months,

You’ve worked really hard lately. How about taking the afternoon off and go to the movies or the beach while I get on with the rest of my day?

I have found the latter approach works the best for me. Let’s face it – it is unlikely that the Gremlin or inner critic will ever go away. We’ll just have to make the best of it and continue on in spite of what the Inner Critic says.

SO WHEN I’M AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MOUNTAIN AND THE GREMLIN TELLS ME THERE’S NO WAY I CAN MAKE IT UP THE STEEP SLOPE OF THE CHALLENGES I WILL FACE IN 2010, I AM GOING TO SMILE, THANK IT FOR SHARING AND CONTINUE ON WITH MY LIFE - NO MATTER WHAT!
