Masik Karthigai is a special monthly festival, greatly admired by Tamil people. According to the Tamil calendar, it is a religious observance of the eminent festivity. It is a festival of lights, gleams and brightness all around, celebrated monthly to worship and praise Lord Shiva for his benovelence and grace upon the human race. The festival of “Karthigai Deepam is celebrated every month, to worship Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan inside their respective sanctum-sanctorum in the temples. “karthigai Deepam 2019” is welcomed with a lot of passion, and dedication by people across the Globe.

When does Masik Karthigai fall?

“Masik Karthigai Deepam” got its name from Nakshatra Karthigai or Krittika. Scientifically, it takes place, when the moon is in conjunction with the constellation Karthigai. When Pleiades and Pournami (Pooran Maasi) are at the same time, and the constellation is visible as a group of six stars in the cosmic universe which looks like a pendant from/on the ear.

Masik Karthigai Festival:

On Masik Karthigai devotees of Lord Shiva and Lord Muruga worship their lovable Gods in their homes. They witness their blessings and boons, on this special day. Karthigai Deepam is celebrated as Masik Karthigai monthly.

Devotees light up streets with the earthen lamps on the Karthigai Deepam festival. Many people nicely decorate their house and put Kolam or Rangoli outside their house.
This festival is celebrated as Thrikkarthika in Kerala. Many houses in Tamilnadu celebrate this festival with a lot of fervor and piety. This is one of the oldest temples, and many people were observing this festival since time immemorial.

When Krittika Nakshatra is sanctified, the festival of Karthigai Deepam came into practice during the Sangam Era. This festival is highly important In the city of Thiruvannamalai, where a gigantic fire lamp, known as “Mahadeepam” is lit on a high peak, where people could still witness them. Many devotees pay their tributes and homage to Lord Shiva.


It is believed that Karthigai month is highly sacred, and has mystical powers. Devotees praying to God, and visiting temples will gain a lot of positive powers. Many people fast on this day and gain a lot of happiness by following Karthigai Deepam rituals. It is also said that doing charity on this day enhances the happiness of the family. Many people believe that God sometimes comes in the form of human and take alms in this Kali Yuga, and shower the benevolence upon their devotees. A lot of people enjoy their life with the blessings of God. Lord Shiva curbs the Birth-Death cycle and grants a lot of boons. Lord Muruga is the amulet, who protects his devotees. Lord Vishnu is the magnificent giver and is highly compassionate and generous.
