Marketing is something most wellness practitioner’s dread. It can be not only confusing but extremely frustrating as well. The greatest fear is spending too much time and money on advertisements that bring little or no new clients/patients.
Marketing your business does not need to be difficult though. If you avoid the following common marketing mistakes you will find attracting and retaining clients much easier.
Mistake No. 1 - Thinking everyone is a potential customer. This is the common mistake Gail and I see our clients making. Do not let fear drive you into trying to reach every single person who can use your services. This is a huge mistake and it is a big reason so many find themselves out of business. It is like taking a handful of darts and throwing them all at the wall at once. You will be lucky if you get even one to stick and most likely, it will be nowhere near the target. Instead, if you know who your niche market is, you will be able to focus your marketing efforts on reaching them and you will hit your target much more often. This doesn’t mean you can’t help someone who is not in your target market. It just means that you are not focusing your efforts on marketing to them.
Mistake No. 2- Not having a marketing plan. Some of you reading this might be thinking what marketing plan? Too many small business owners miss this step, yet it is essential if you want to attract and retain more clients. How can you achieve the results you want if you do not know how you are going to accomplish them? When creating your marketing plan it is important to start with your target market. When you focus on too large of a market, it is impossible to reach the people who can really use your services effectively - unless you have a huge marketing budget.
Mistake No. 3 - Not using your best resources. Marketing does not need to cost you lots of money. Look at where your ideal clients are hanging out. How can you reach them? Whose services are they already using? What products are they already buying? Can you partner or collaborate with any of these people?
Mistake No. 4 – Giving up too early. Remember that it takes multiple touches with potential clients to get them to even try what you have to offer. Some studies say that it takes as few as 9 contacts and as many as 27 to get people to pay attention to your marketing efforts and to take action. Don’t give up! Try it, track it, tweak it and do it again.
