There was once a time, when people started losing their hair, they would immediately try to hide it under a wig or hair piece. Then came the early years of hair transplant, wherein hair would be taken from one part of the body and transplanted onto the head. However, since these were the early days, the transplant would most often look very obvious, which is why several people choose to steer clear of the same. Today, hair transplant has come a long way, and has become the chosen method of attaining a crowning glory in every sense of the word. With new innovations in the domain, there are more doctors today working on how to create the perfect head of hair, than ever. As a matter of fact, there are conferences and seminars being conducted, all over the world, to not only talk about possible new methods, but also discuss and share the path breaking dynamics of this world. Hair transplant, in the simplest of terms, is a method by which, hair is ‘harvested’ from one part of the head or any other part of the body, and then carefully implanted into that area, where there is partial or complete hair loss. There are actually degrees to hair loss, and it is only after gauging the same, that a surgeon will be able to chart out a course of treatment. Alopecia areata is what plagues most people - this is a condition, where there is gradual hair loss, and many a times, there are obvious bald spots that start to appear in the middle of the head or there is thinning at the temple and sides. Alopecia totalis is a condition wherein there is total baldness, and the head has almost a shine. And then there is alopecia universalis, where the hair loss is so extensive that the person lacks even eyebrows. A successful hair transplant will be dependent on several factors, including the expertise of the doctor, the presence of an abundant donor area and the demarcation of proper recipient sites. Presently, there are two procedures that are most popular – follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). In the former, a strip of hair, is harvested from the donor site, and small units of hair follicles are carefully extracted. These grafts are then implanted into the recipient site, while the donor site will be sutured. In the latter, which is a more modern method, individual follicles are carefully extracted, by means of minute incisions, and these are immediately transplanted into the recipient site. Today, more doctors prefer FUE, because of the minimally invasive nature and the reduced healing time. It is important to remember that hair transplant is a still growing field and there are new developments, almost every month. New methods are being tried and there are even robotic methods of doing FUE. This is why, for anyone considering a hair transplant, it is essential that the choice be made with care and research. Getting a transplant done through a reputed clinic or doctor will ensure results that will last a long time, and will also look completely natural. In addition, there will also be minimal chances of anything going wrong.
