It is your choice whether you love your job or hate your job. If you love your job that is “great” and stay with it. If you hate our job life can be miserable and very stressful then maybe change is needed. Over the years I found myself in both those situations. Earlier in my life when I began working in the family florist business I really enjoyed it. At first my job was doing simple chores around the shop.
As time went on I drove the delivery truck taking flower arrangements to customers and even delivering floral arrangements to the various funeral homes in the area.I eventually learned floral designing and made arrangements for all kinds of occasions even funeral floral arrangements. Then I advanced to talking to young ladies about their wedding flowers and also designing their bouquets, too.
After two years serving in the U.S. Army I returned home to take up my job once again as a floral designer. I was now a married man and was beginning to start a family too.
My wife eventually began to be involved in the business. Her job was mostly talking to customers about kind of floral arrangement the wanted. With her help she and I began a new service to wedding customers.
The service included attending the wedding service and personally assisting the bride and her party. Prior to the bride going down the aisle in the church we made sure the ushers had their buttonaire pinned on and that the attendants and the bride were holding their bouquets properly. At the proper time we made sure the ushers brought the aisle runner back up the aisle for the bride to start down it for the ceremony.
I did enjoy all these experiences but the pressure of this fast moving business was about to wear on me. The excitement of being in the business was no longer appealing to me like it had been before. I was contemplating a career change but that idea wasn’t going over well with my dad and my wife. I tried many times to rejuvenate my excitement for the business but it wasn’t working.
Finally I made the decision. I was going to quit the business and send out resumes and search for ads in the newspaper for a possible sales position. That is what I decided was my choice of a new career.
One day I was finally contacted to go for a interview got hired and spent 1 ½ years in the job until I had a dispute with the sales manager and decided to quit. However I wasn’t totally discouraged and went through the job seeking process once again. The persistence finally paid off and I got a request for another interview. Again I got hired on the spot and eventually spent 20 years with a family owned sales company.
Those years were the most exciting and profitable years of my life. If I had known years before this how great it would have been I would have made the change sooner than I did. So let me just emphasize once again; either love your job and stay with it; hate your job and make a change and finally live happier ever after.
