Green Coffee Bean: Weight Loss Fact
Origin of coffee: Coffee is the seed of the coffee cherry fruit. After flowering, it takes an average of nine months for the cherry to ripen before it is picked. The coffee tree can survive for 70 years. The first flower appears during the third year but production is profitable from the fifth year.

What is green coffee?
Green Coffee beans are the coffee beans that have not yet been roasted. Green coffee contains chlorogenic acid which is a phytochemicalable to reduce blood sugar levels and potentially exert an anti-diabetic effect by improving glucose metabolism. It has also been implicated in weight loss and exerting an anti-obesity effect through the way body handles blood sugar and metabolism.

How green coffee works ?
Sufficient levels of chlorogenic acid confer more benefits due to a higher bioactivity. Chlorogenic acids (CGAs) are a family of esters that are structural analogs of quinic acid (QA) carrying one or more cinnamate derivatives such as caffeic, ferulic, and p-coumaric acids.

Chlorogenic acid reduces food cravings, reduces daily calorie intake, and induces body fat loss by thermogenesis by acting as a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARa) agonist, just like statins used for the treatment of cholesterol and triglycerides disorders. The GCB activates the liver to produce more bile and increase the metabolic process and discharges glucose into the bloodstream. Further, caffeine releases fatty acids from the stored body fat and suppresses fat absorption, whereas CGA assists the liver in processing the fatty acids more efficiently and reducing hepatic triglycerides levels, thus resulting in weight loss.

In addition, chlorogenic acid may also reduce proliferation of new fat cells through its antioxidant effects. Further, intestinal glucose uptake is also reduced thus reducing blood and liver fats (triglycerides). Chlorogenic acids and caffeine work together in reducing abdominal fat by increasing lipolysis or fat cells being opened up for energy release.

Green coffee bean extract (GCBE) suppresses fat absorption and chlorogenic acid reduces hepatic triglycerides levels. Other phenolic compounds present in GCBE, namely neochlorogenic acid and feruloyl quinic acid, enhance hepatic carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) activity. GCBE has also been postulated to modify hormone secretion and glucose tolerance in humans by facilitating absorption of glucose from the distal rather than the proximal part of the GIT. Anti-obesity effects are mediated via alterations in plasma adipokine level, body fat distribution, and downregulating fatty acids and cholesterol biosynthesis and upregulating fatty acids oxidation and expression of PPARα in the liver in addition to suppressing accumulation of hepatic triglycerides.
