We all have things we want in life that are out of our reach. And we have no idea how to cross the seemingly scary and dangerous “unknown” to get to them. We think about a better version of ourself. Maybe it’s a more satisfying career, or a business opportunity. Perhaps it is finding (or dumping) a spouse, quitting a bad, life crippling habit, or perhaps it is getting healthier. We want to cross this rubicon to a better situation, but the pain of doing it outweighs the pain of where we currently are… UNTIL IT DOESN’T!
Have you ever been to the place where you said ENOUGH?!? Or “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” Or perhaps, “I now know this is unbearable and I cannot live like this anymore! Something has to change, but how? What can I do? I’m scared and afraid because…”
I want you to think of yourself as a circus performer. You are the flying trapeze artist. Imagine yourself on the performer’s stand high above the crowd. The stage lights are shining on you as you grip the trapeze bar in your hands. You hear the giant roar of the crowd below as the drum roll grows louder. With a jump, you fly across the room at soaring heights and LET GO OF THE TRAPEZE! You simply trust. Trust that your partner on the other end is ready and will catch you. Trust that in the end, all will be ok. This is the same thing as letting go of where you find yourself stuck and jumping into the unknown of what can be. Everyone that has ever faced making changes has been scared. They faced those fears and TOOK ACTION ANYWAY!
What is this current challenge for you? What is it that you need to change? Be honest here. What is stopping you from taking the next big step up the stairs to your most fulfilling life? Is it time to write the next chapter in the book of your life? What is your next incarnation? What new canvas can you throw some fresh paint on? If you knew you couldn’t fail, what major move would you make right now? (Get a pen and paper and write it out… Right NOW please!
Tools to Help You
I’m sure you’re thinking “Where do I start”? You start by clearly writing the “title” of the situation. Some examples, “I wish to stop smoking within 30 days and here is how I’ll do it” “I want to get rid of $52,674 of debt within one year.” “I, Susie Roberts, am now a full time investor and here is my plan.” “I will lose 76 pounds by next year.”
Next, write why you are doing this. This step is the rocket fuel to ensuring your success. Write out a big why that will help push you to complete your intention.
Then, write the exact steps you’ll take and by when. Who will help you and hold you accountable? What rewards you will get by doing this? What pain it will cause if you do not do it? The clearer you define these action steps, the higher your chance of making this dream come to fruition.
Let's Recap. Ask yourself:
What exactly will I do?
Why is it so important?
What are the first steps?
Who to help and hold me accountable?
Go easy on yourself and give yourself grace.
If this is all new to you, be gentle but firm with yourself. Take control, pray, or meditate on it. Ask for help. Look at your plan again the next morning and tweak it. Show it to others. Take criticism constructively, but beware of the “nay sayers” that may not have your true interests in mind. Feel the momentum as you grow towards your intentions. Be ready for the inevitable setbacks and tests of your will. Change is not easy and does not happen overnight. Some failure and setbacks are to be expected. But you will persevere! Your want is now bigger than your previous “comfort zone.” You are ready, willing, and quite able to overcome challenges and setbacks that might have stopped you before.
Somehow this time it feels different! You know you are going to LET GO OF THE TRAPEZE. You trust yourself to be able to catch the bar of the trapeze as it comes toward you. You will not fall. You will not fail. Why? Because your 1Life Fully Lived awaits you.
1… 2… 3… Soar and let go of the trapeze! Do it because You truly want it and you’re worthy!
Good luck! Now go and make wonderful things happen.
~ Tim Rhode
Tim would tell you that he got off to a slow start. After growing up in the rural town of Portola in Northern California and barely graduating high school, Tim Rhode found himself at the age of 25 working as a grocery clerk with two young children to provide for.
He eventually found his “niche” selling real estate; and from 1986 to 2000, he sold over 2,500 homes and from 1997 to 2006 he invested in over 100 properties. Tim focused on saving money, keeping his expenses low, and playing solid “financial defense” which allowed him to basically retire, and he was financially free at the age of 40.
Not wanting to play hike, bike or ski all day, Tim threw his energy into his true passion: helping people thrive and live their most fulfilling life. He founded the nonprofit 1Life Fully Lived to help people of all ages gain the tools and skills they need to thrive and also co-founded GoBundance, a high-level mastermind, with David Osborn, Pat Hiban and Mike McCarthy to help healthy, wealthy, generous people lead epic lives. We have a women’s tribe now!
Tim has also authored numerous books and has been featured on a variety of podcasts and media outlets. He now lives near his children in the High Sierras with his wife and dog.
