I don’t know about you – but I am addicted to all things ‘happy’ and I make no apologies for it! This past week, I was up very early to settle in and watch the wedding of the ‘Dude and the Duchess’ (as Prince Harry called them).

When I see an event that is so very successful and unique and up-lifting, I am always watching for lessons that I can apply to my business. The Royal Wedding did not disappoint. Here is what I took away, in random order.

Lesson #1: Have a Vision. We all know how important it is to have a vision for your business. It’s just as critical to execute that vision, while keeping an eye on the details at the same time. There is no doubt in my mind that the happy couple had many consultations with the Queen, Prince Charles, etc. with respect to what they wanted for their wedding. It was evident, however, that their personal vision was very strong. What’s the vision for your business? Does it excite you?

Lesson #2: ‘The Devil is in The Details” – There were many references to the ‘presence of Princess Diana’ – the bridal bouquet, the empty chair in the Abbey, William going out to greet the crowd the night before the wedding – all ‘so-called’ small details, yet so powerful. What are the details that are apparent in your business, on a daily basis, that move you forward in a compelling, yet effective, way? Pay attention.

Lesson #3: Control Your Environment! Come on! – Trees in the Abbey! I loved that. A small bridal party – totally reflective of the Royal couple and their personal style. A ‘drive-by’ in Prince Charles’ sports car? Totally cool. What does your environment say about you? How happy are you with it – whether it’s your office space, your vehicle, your cell phone? Can you ‘execute’, function and have fun – all at the same time?

Lesson #4: Surround Yourself With the Right People. “We are the average of the 5 people we hang around”. Of course, there was a ton of protocol at the Royal Wedding. However, it was also clear that Will and Kate had a strong hand when it came to the wedding invitations – the Pub owner in her town, their friends from College, the owners of the convenience store in her village, and many more people like that. Who do you spend the most time with when it comes to your business life? Take a really good look – and make some changes, if you are serious about growing your business this year. Work with a coach and that will automatically put you into a new circle – of influence, inspiration and support.

Lesson #5: Have fun and keep it simple. It was very evident that Will and Kate were enjoying their day – from the glances at each other, to Kate’s words when she came out on the balcony (“Wow!”), to when she got in the carriage (“I’m so happy!”) – to the smaller bridal party. In business, WE tend to make things complicated. Simplify is my motto for the year. What about you? How much fun are you having? (How much fun are you to LIVE WITH?) Where/how can you go about simplifying some things – and start now.

Conclusion:

Whether it’s a Royal Wedding – or your daily life – there are always lessons to be learned. The keys to success are in the application and implementation of these lessons. Be aware of what’s going on around you – what is working, what is not, what/who is holding you back?

I do choose to focus on the positive – there are days and there are times when I realize that change is necessary. When my energy is feeling low, when my bank account balance is not where I want it to be, when I am at events and recognize that I had said ‘Yes’ when I should have said ‘No’ – so many clear signs. It is because of those times and situations that I choose to find the positive aspects of events like the Royal Wedding. There is always something to learn – and to apply to my business and to my life.

What was YOUR take-away from the Royal Wedding – and how can you apply it to your business?
