Too Much With the News.

We are too much with the news. Meaning, we pay too much attention to the news. We give too much of our time and attention to the news. Most people are “news hounds.” They can’t get enough of the news. Need some proof? Look at all the advertising money that is poured into the 24 hour news channels, into the “24 hour news cycle.”

People turn on the news when they wake up in the morning and they watch the news before they go to bed. Someone told me lately that he listens to the news with a headset while he is sleeping. That is being too much with the news. Way too much.

Let’s examine the news. What is it, what’s it for? For one thing, it’s an escape. When we get into the news we can focus our attention out there rather than in here. We take our attention off the noise in our head and put it on the noise out there. For another thing, our mind likes to be busy. It likes to be occupied doing, thinking, worrying. The news fits the bill. The mind likes troubles and problems. Perfect, the news is all about troubles and problems. The mind eats negativity for dinner. The news is a feast for the negative mind.

Not everyone turns the news on in the morning and not everyone watches the news before bed. Even so, our mind will say, we need to know what is going on in the world. That statement is our mind telling us a lie. We don’t have to know everything that is wrong in the world. We don’t have to know everything that is negative in the world. Our mind is saying, c’mon now, it’s not all negative. That’s true, except our mind isn’t interested in anything positive. The newspapers would close their doors, the news channels would be gone, and all of the news broadcasts would be shortened to just a few minutes. They couldn’t find sponsors because no one would be watching or reading!!

Our mind is saying, it’s important to know what’s going on in our world. Who told us that one? Hmmm, is it possible we were sold on that by people selling all that negativity for a profit? A challenge would be to go through the newspaper and mark off the things we need to know, things we really need to know. Do we need to know about war, killings, accidents, trouble, problems?

The negative mind needs to know. However, we do not need to know. We do not need to know any of it. How does it help us? Does it quiet our mind? Does it give us peace of mind? Does it help us gain abundance, happiness, success, love? How can negative information possibly do anything for us except to make us negative and keep us more negative?

Negativity is a habit most of us do not even know we are practicing. We get accustomed to it. We are taught as children in school we need to be up on current events. Why do we have to be up on current events? Well, we need to know about global warming. Who said that? How does that information help us? We need to know about the recession. Would there even be a recession if millions of people didn’t read or watch the news and then make buying and selling decisions based on that news? Most of our actions are motivated by negativity and negative news.

Here’s a test, stop with the news for one month, and see how your life changes. See if you need the news. See if it’s true that you have to know. There is a very good chance your health will improve, your energy will be higher, you will have a sunnier outlook. There is a very good chance you will see what it means to live in a positive frame of mind.

Watch what people talk about. We humans, being governed by our mind, feel the need to fill the void of quiet. We have to talk. Watch what people like to talk about. Frequently, it is all the things they have seen or heard on the news. Did you hear about this? Did you hear about that? Keep a mental score. How much of that is positive and how much of that is negative?

Watch what you think about. Our noisy mind likes to think about things, especially negative things. If we are with the news, chances are high that our mind will be thinking about the news as we go about our driving, our working, our recreation, all the time. Yes, even when we are sleeping. And, the news being in great part negative means in great part, we are occupied by negativity. Our mind likes to grab onto something fearful, sensational, or even hurtful and just begin to chatter away ceaselessly about it. How does that help us? How does it help anyone?

In the Release Technique we learn to see what we are doing to ourselves with our habits and actions. When we watch the late night news and then go to sleep, we are taking all of that garbage to sleep with us. Our stream of consciousness before we fall asleep continues into our sleep and dreams.

Overall, our world is not positive. It’s because the individuals that make up the world are not positive. The Release Technique is about getting positive. We get positive by letting go of the negativity. When we are with the news, when we are into the news, we are into negativity.

When we hang onto negative habits of the past, like being with the news, we are keeping ourselves negative. Isn’t it time to do something different? To have something different, we have to do something different. With the Release Technique, we get positive because under all that negativity, positive is our basic nature. When we get positive, we get loving, we get abundant, we get successful. The Release Technique is about letting go of all that negativity and getting positive.
