What happens when your expectations are dashed?

When it feels like your world is falling apart?

When you don't have the answers?

Did you think that you would find your soulmate by now?  Never get divorced?
Did you think you would always have financial security?  Not outlive your children?  Find your purpose?

When life takes an disappointing turn, it can shake you to the core.   Some people describe it as the floor dropping out from under them.  Others feel sideswiped, disappointed, depressed, insecure, even lost.

Where is the solid ground?  Where is the stability?  What is the truth of the matter?

One of my favorite authors, Avivah Gottleib Zornberg, has termed this experience as a kind of vertigo.  When you experience vertigo, the first thing you want to do is try to stabilize yourself.

You may grab for something that seems solid - the most accessible explanation or a cliche' belief.  It may be something that made sense in your past.  Even though you know that it might be an illusion, you choose it anyway.

Illusions and symbols can be a good temporary fix, but they don't access the core issues.

What are you holding on to right now?  What is in your hand, bracing you from the fall?  Is there something that may be an illusory security blanket?   Have you been unwilling to step into the challenge and ask the deeper questions?

Letting go and and releasing yourself to this vertigo is one of the scariest and most courageous things one can ever do in this life.

Sometimes people let go in stages.  Sometimes they just let go.

I call it the Free-fall of Trust.

Trust to ask the bigger questions.

Trust that you will find something more real than you've had (even though you aren't seeing it or feeling it in this moment).

Trust that you won't always be falling.

Trust that there is a soft landing...
...into grace.

Underneath all of my claims to truth and beneath all my questions lies a mysterious knowing that there indeed is a foundation.  I may not know what it is or where it is exactly, but I'm aware that it exists.

Each time the floor drops out from under me and each time I land on a new level, I am perhaps getting a little bit closer to that truer reality...the one that is etched in the very fabric of the universe.  The one that safely supports me.
