How to smooth hair in Photoshop

A saying goes, “an image worth than a thousand words”. Every part of an image is so important. In a portrait image, it is very important to get soften hair. Photoshop featured with numbers of the useful tool which helps us to make an image outstanding.

In this article, I am going to discuss how to smooth hair in Photoshop. Follow the below tips step by step and learn to make the hair smooth.

Step 1

At first, open an image in Photoshop. Then, make a duplicate layer twice. To make a duplicate layer, right click on the image and choose duplicate layer. Or you can use the shortcut to make a duplicate layer. To do this, you need to hold down Ctrl + J. Do the same thing twice to make two duplicate layers.

Step 2

Then, you need to go to Filter > Oil paint. This will bring up a dialogue box like the below screenshot.
From the dialogue box, set the stylization based on your image. If the hair on your image is much more messed, increase the value to 10. Choose the lower value if the hair isn’t so messed.

Choose the cleanliness, scale based on your image. Keep away the bristle details as you don’t need to get details of the image. If you happy with the changes you have made, click on the ok button to close the dialogue box.

Step 3

The filters (oil paint) you have created also make smooth your model’s chin, nose, eyes, neck etc. So, create a layer mask to hide all the unwanted areas. Then, go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal all. Next, select the brush tool from the toolbar menu and set the hardness to 20%.
Make sure you have the black foreground color and brush on chin, nose, eyes, and neck etc. If you want, you can reduce the opacity and decrease the effect on hair or other parts.

Step 4

If you think, the exposure will increase over, you can fix it. Simply, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Exposure. Then, lower the exposure.
And that’s it. We get the effect on hair.
