At some point in our lives we have all wondered how people of another culture think and live. While traveling abroad might seem the only way of doing this there are some other options which you might like to explore without leaving home.

  1. Use the internet. This is probably the simplest way to do it these days, and there are quite a number of different approaches you could use. One idea is simply to check what foreign friends you can see on your current buddies’ Facebook contacts and drop them a line. Otherwise there are plenty of online communities and forums where you can get involved and start up some nice conversations.
  2. Get involved in your local community. If you live in a big city then there will probably be a lot of different ethnic groups living there. Simply going to their neighborhood and attending some sort of show or event can be enough for some people to get talking to you.
  3. Find a pen pal club. The old fashioned method of writing a conventional letter to your new pen friend might no longer be very popular, but these organizations can still be very useful for putting you in touch with potential buddies whom you could communicate with via email.
  4. Teach English. If there are people in your community who have come from abroad then many of them are probably really keen to learn English or improve their current level. You could check out whether any voluntary organizations offer free classes and ask to become a teacher with them. As well as being a rewarding job you will meet lots of interesting people.

Once you start to speak to some of your new foreign friends you might discover that language is a problem. If this is the case then you might like to pick up some of the other person’s language. Learning a foreign tongue is now easier than ever. For instance, there are lots of Spanish classes Chicago residents can go to and a wide number of Arabic lessons Washington residents are now able to choose from.
