Boniva is brand name for ibandronate. It belongs to bisphosphonates group of medicines. It is used for treatment of osteoporosis in women after menopause. It also prevents osteoporosis by affecting the bone formation and breakdown cycle. It slows down the process of bone loss and alongside increases bone mass. This alteration prevents bone fractures. Though it is mainly used to treat osteoporosis, it is also used for other purposes as well.

It has been linked to many severe side effects. There are a large number of Women using Boniva for treatment or prevention of osteoporosis in women after menopause. Other way to treat osteoporosis in women after menopause is hormone replacement therapy. But this therapy has shown increased risk of heart disease and breast cancer. This has led more and more women to use bisphosphonates drugs as Boniva in earlier age.

Women, who took this drug for long time and started using it at early age, are more prone to develop Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ). The most prominent signs and symptoms of osteonecrosis of the jaw are pain, teeth loosening, swelling of the gums, infection of the gums, poor healing of the gums, numbness or a feeling of heaviness in the jaw, exposed bone, and drainage. Patients, whose disease is in the least serious form of this condition, may not show any symptoms at all. But in some cases, patients even have had to get a section of their jaw removed.

A similar drug Fosamax has shown around 2500 patients, who suffered from bone death and jawbone decay or osteonecrosis of the jaw. Many patients using bisphosphonate medicines have suffered severe pain. Some of them have suffered even more as they may have been left bedridden or have required the usage of devices like wheelchairs, crutches, and walkers.

Recently a study confirmed the fact that long-term use of bisphosphonates like Boniva could lead to atypical fractures of bone in older women. This study was published in the journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Several studies in the past have also shown similar results. It is better to evaluate pros and cons of Boniva before using it.

Who can file a Boniva lawsuit?

Anyone who or whose relative or any close person has suffered severe side effects while using Boniva, can file a lawsuit against Roche related to Boniva. Anyone filing a Boniva lawsuit can claim medical expenses and compensation for pain and sufferings.
