Here is the summary of a conference I gave on the theme: how to decorate your bedroom without breaking the bank?
I like to remember that in decoration, there is no point in following too many rules. There isn't really a right way to go about it since a successful decor depends on the personality of each individual.
As a stylist, here is how I go about furnishing a bedroom and the steps I like to follow, from the arrangement of the furniture to the choice of furniture, including the choice of accessories.
1. Plan the arrangement of the furniture
Look at your empty room and determine what would be the optimal arrangement of the furniture. Start with the largest piece of furniture which is arguably the bed.
Ideally, try to place it so that it is the first glance when entering the room. If there is a window in the bedroom, try to make it so that you can look out the window when you are sitting in bed.
Finally, if possible make sure you can go around the bed on both sides, leaving a space of at least two feet, or 60 cm around the bed.
2. Choose your furniture
Your two biggest expenses in the bedroom should definitely be the mattress and the bed.
During the conference, Vincent from M2Go reminded us that it is good to try on your mattress for at least 15 or 20 minutes to be sure of making a good purchase.

If you are on a budget, then it is easy to do without other pieces of furniture or find used ones.
As a general rule, a room that is rather uncluttered and uncluttered is better.
A bedside table or a shelf accompanied by a wall lamp, a chest of drawers, and an occasional chair can be perfectly sufficient to furnish a bedroom.
Consider adapting them to the dimensions of your room. A large, massive headboard or an overly large dresser will make a small room even more narrow.
Shop around for your dresser, chairs, or bedside lamps in bazaars or classifieds. The mismatched but well-appointed furniture will add style to the room.
It is also an opportunity to save money by diverting objects such as a chair, a ladder, suitcases, or concrete blocks used as a bedside table.
3. Settle the question of tidying up
Unless you are an ace in order, open storage should be avoided in a bedroom.
Favor closed storage. If the bedroom is small and doesn't have a built-in closet, opt for cabinets that exploit the height and choose light colors so as not to suffocate the room with overly imposing furniture.
4. Find the style that will work with your furniture
The style you choose for your bed, as well as your chest of drawers or closed wardrobe, should already put you on the trail of the chosen style of the bedroom.
So take inspiration from an item you love and already own. Otherwise, match your style with a painting or a fabric you like (curtains, cushions, duvet cover, rugs).
Be careful, however, not to base everything on the choice of the duvet cover. We forget that duvet covers have a limited lifespan because of their numerous washes.
Make sure you can change your duvet cover one day without having to rearrange all the colors in your bedroom.
5. Bet on something unexpected
What makes, in my opinion, the beauty of decor is an unexpected element that catches the eye and makes the piece unique.
Sometimes it can be an architectural element already present such as a brick wall or beautiful wooden beams. Determine what this favorite element will be and make sure you put it in the spotlight.
6. find the right balance between colors, symmetry, and patterns
Start by choosing the dominant color for your bedroom. This can be inspired by an element already present in the room.
You can then choose to decorate your room in a monochrome way (with one or more variations of the same shade) or associate it with one or two accent colors. These must be added by small touches (a fabric, a painted piece of furniture, a pair of curtains).
I like the harmony of analogous colors, those which are similar in terms of hues (blue and green, red and pink, etc.).
Adding patterns is not necessary, but like textures (wool, linen, silk, etc.), patterns catch the eye and make the decor more lively.
They can be added through a rug, curtains, cushions, or the duvet cover. But it becomes very risky to try to mix them on all these elements. The rule to keep in mind is to stay in the same 3 colors (maximum) if you mix several fabrics with different patterns.
Finally, with regard to symmetry, it also has an effect resting on the eye. Two identical lights on the bedside tables, two bookcases on either side of the bed create harmony.
Conversely, we can have fun creating the unexpected and interesting element of a bedroom by decentring, for example, a large frame placed above the bed or by mismatching the bedside tables.
7. Use the tips to modify the dimensions of a room With paint
A darker bottom of the walls and a light top will make the room taller. A darker painted ceiling will visually lower it creating a more cozy and warm atmosphere.
The back wall painted in a darker color will give more depth to the room
