What’s the meaning of life? It’s whatever meaning you give it.

If we call life or any situation a problem or a challenge or an opportunity or a game, it will strongly change the way we think, feel and act.

Let’s think of a time when we didn’t succeed at something. We could say “I’m stupid”, or we can say “This didn’t work. I’m going to try something else”. It’s a minor change, with enormous results.

If we get in the habit of saying “I’m stupid”, “It’s my fault”, “I’m a failure”, and so forth, how do we think we’ll feel and ultimately act? What results will we get?

How will what you say affect people in your lives who you care about, like your child?

Let’s imagine for instance our child didn’t succeed at something, called them self stupid, and decided to give up? How would we feel knowing that we contributed to that?

The meaning to give to an event by saying “it’s the end” or “it’s the beginning” or “that’s exciting” or “that means there are more options now that I know this” will affect your health! You’ll send different neurotransmitters to your body that could make you sick or extremely healthy!

How would we feel if the next time something didn’t work out, we say “This didn’t work. I’m going to try something else”. I explain this concept in detail in my video on Anxiety & Social Anxiety Treatment.

We may have gotten into the habit of describing our lives and our identity in certain ways. Whether it makes us feel good or bad can be changed with a slight change in meaning. Let’s also remember from our Change Our Beliefs section, that repetition and/or an emotionally charged experience coupled with saying something will eventually create our beliefs.

During our sessions, my clients choose new meanings for their lives. A little change in language and/or meaning can be the difference between depressed and happy, anxious and strong, and low self-esteem and high self-esteem.
