How To Build Your Own 72-Hour-Emergency-Response-Kit
Written by Tracy Mullins
Tips for building your 72 hour emergency survival kit. Most emergencies are handled at the local level and not by the federal government. This places a lot of responsibility and stress on the local community for taking care of its citizens. After an emergency occurs the 911 system and cell phone networks are overwhelmed and are basically worthless. Being able to help yourself is the not only imperative to your survival but your civic duty. For the elderly or sick friends and family need to be prepared to help.
Among the responsibilities faced by local Services are:
Identifying hazards and assessing potential risk to the community.
Enforcing building codes, zoning ordinances, and land-use management programs.
Coordinating emergency plans to ensure a quick and effective response.
Fighting fires and responding to hazardous materials incidents.
Establishing warning systems.
Stocking emergency supplies and equipment.
Assessing damage and identifying needs.
Responding to riots and civil unrest.
Responding to theft and destruction of property.
Triage of mass casualty incidents.
This is only a small list of things that the local government is handling in the event of either a local incident or a national/global incident. Building and having your own 72 hour emergency survival kit or sometimes referred to as a "bug out bag" is easy and will help reduce stress, confusion and your need to rely on government resources.
1) Home - Your kit should contain clean food, water, and supplies for at least three days for each person. Keep this kit in a designated place and have it ready in case you have to leave your home quickly. Make sure all family members know where the kit is kept. Additionally, you may want to consider having supplies for sheltering for up to two weeks. An alte
ative location for sheltering is also a great idea. Maybe some land you own or a secluded camping area you are familiar with.
2) Work - This kit should be in one container in your trunk and ready to “grab and go” in case you are evacuated from your workplace. Make sure you have clean food and water in the kit. Also, be sure to have walking shoes at your workplace in case an evacuation requires walking long distances.
3) Car - This kit should contain: food, water, first aid, supplies, flares, jumper cables, and seasonal supplies.
Storing one gallon of water per person per day is recommended for drinking, cooking and maintaining good hygiene. Staying hydrated and clean will go a long way as even a minor illness could be deadly.
Your 72 Hour Emergency Kit can also be customized to your local climate. If you are in a hot area more water will be needed. If you are in a cold climate more warm clothes and a heat source will be needed. It is good to sit down with your family and make your emergency preparedness checklist. Then, every time you go to the store you buy a little to add to it.
Within a few weeks you will be surprised how quickly it builds up. My family shops a lot at Costco which is a popular bulk warehouse where you can get food, clothing and supplies at a big discount from a regular grocery or department store. Every time we go we check our emergency kit to see what we need to add to it. We a lot $50 per shop to add to it. Over the last 6 months it has grown very big.
Another great food resource is to learn how to grow vegetables from "out of ground containers" or more commonly known as hydroponic gardening. You can produce 3-4 times more yield than a typical dirt garden for a fraction of the cost. This is a great way to produce your own food because you can only store so much before it goes bad or breaks the bank. Eventually your food supply will run out. Being able to provide your own grown organic food will guarantee long-term survival.
Last but not least you need to focus on storing lots of water. While a gallon a day per person what it the crisis lasts months or years. Having a way to store and disinfect water will go a long way in your ability to live off the grid. There are water purification systems you can buy or maybe you live in a place where you can dig a well. Look into how you can store or access enough water to sustain your family for the long haul.
These are just some tips on how to build your own 72-hour-emergency-kit. Taking small steps and having a plan will get you where you need to go. Don't get overwhelmed and keep focused. You will have a nice size emergency supply kit in no time.
