Hi, I know you have stumbled to this article in search of your question ‘how to boost up laptop by safe overclocking’? So before going in deep, let me explain what exactly overclocking is.
Overclocking is a process by which computer or its components run faster than the specified clock frequency by the manufacturer.
Guys, it’s a vast topic and can be done on various types of laptops having varying specification. So, clearly specifying, the things which are going to be discussed of a laptop having following specification are
• An atom processor based machine.
• A windows operating system.
• A set goal for your CPU speed. For e.g. 2.1 GHz for HTPC’s AT3IONT-I motherboard on Newegg.
• Prime95, a go-to program for stress testing computers.
• Memtest for overclocking RAM and checking its stability.
• ATITool for overclocking graphics chip and checking its stability.
Till now, I have discussed about necessities for performing overclocking. Now the methods to do so are as follows,
• By BIOS overclocking: this is one of the methods to overclock a laptop, where this option is inbuilt in the bios setting.
Steps:
• Reboot your computer and hold the setup key as it boots, mainly Delete or F2 key.
• Look around advanced CPU option in the BIOS settings.
• Do the changes and enjoy!
If in case, this option doesn’t exist in you bios setting, proceed as below,
• Check your initial settings:
• Check overclocking options such as “load optimized CPU OC setting", or something similar.
• Select a percentage value or choose a CPU speed.
• If you want more overclocks, turn off hyper threading in CPU menu.
• Turn on multitasking, number of cores and Vcore setting.
• Raise your front side bus speed:
• Unlinked system clock mode or something similar
• Option to change memory clock and FSB will get open.
• Compare fsb with stock speed of your processor.
• Find chip multiplier and increase your CPU speed accordingly.
• Save changes and reboot your computer, enjoy.
• Perform stress test of your laptop:
• Open real temp and prime95.
• Perform torture test by selecting ‘just stress testing”.
• Check CPU temperature and do settings accordingly.
• Repeat the above steps if necessary, and set a stable overclock by checking whether prime 95 runs stable for minimum 6 hours at safe temperature.
• By software overclocking: for this you have to use SetFsb program which can overclock your machine.
Steps:
• Search SetFSB's home page and look for clock generator which is compatible with your machine.
• Check your initial settings:
• Open up SetFSB and pick your clock generator from the dropdown list. Then click to "Get FSB".
• Check your CPU speed, RAM speed, and graphics chip speed with the help of Current FSB/DDR/PCI-E/PCI Frequency box.
• Raise your FSB speed:
• Drag the topmost slider to the right in SetFSB.
• Change FSB value and confirm it by opening CPU-Z.
• Go through stress test for your machine:
• Start prime95.
• Open it up and select "Just Stress Testing"
• Open up real temp and select the best temperature for your CPU accordingly.
• Repeat the above steps if necessary, and set a stable overclock.
