Ok, so everywhere you look,Someone is beating the importance of setting goals to death. Everyone by now knows that they are supposed to set goals, What no one seems to know or want to talk about is, How to set a goal. and what to do with it once you have decided on it.
I am going to assume, that you want to improve something about your life. And am going to write with that assumption.
what is the first step you should take?
Lets start off easy, first thing you need to do is decide what your goal is. I am going to use a vary common one as an example but You need to work the details for yourself out here still. EXAMPLE: I want to make more money!

Great! you are off to a great start you know your goal,Kinda.
Lets take this a step farther, instead of just wanting to make more money, get clear, and I mean crystal clear, in what you want to achieve. for our example,

We will take ' I want to make more money' and clarify it till it looks like this.
' I want in the next 12 months to increase my annual income by $50,000. doing a business that I love that gives me a greater sense of self worth and esteem.'

See how much more powerful that is. we have taken a general statement and made it something that is not only defined, but that is measurable( 50,000) and has a set amount of time(12 months) as well as how we want to achieve it(business that we love).By writing your goals in this manner you have already gotten your mind to focus on what you want to achieve, and hopefully are starting to get excited already. now that we have the what, we need to figure out the how,( don't worry we will get on to the Why soon enough.) What steps do you need to take to achieve this? Well we know from the goal, that we need to start looking at what we are passionate about and would love to make a living at. for me it is Consulting and Website design. For you maybe it is something else. just make sure that is is something that you love doing anyways( that is one of the goal requirements after all).

Now, How much do you know about that as a business? Do you need to educate yourself or take some classes?
there are lots of groups and organizations online that can help you become more familiar with whatever it is, [thank you internet! :)]

What else do you need to do? how about finding a target market? is this going to start out as family and friends?
again I would look to the groups that are available on line. what groups would be likely to want your products or services? If you are selling ant farms, a group for exterminators would not be your best market, however, how about a group where they discuss the "fascinating world of insects?"
So with a little bit of Google(or Yahoo, Bing, etc...) powered research, you have a market.
What is next?
and Next?
How many do you need to sell in a year?
How many in a Month?
How will you attract your customers? are you going to sell online?
do you need a website?
Fliers?
other marketing?

Put down as much detail into your action plan as possible. you should be able to with practice, have a very precise road map to achieving your goal.
so this will be your how. And remember you can always adjust the how either add to it or change things if they are not working just make sure you base your efforts off of your how, and refer back to it often.

So now for the part that is usually the hardest for people. this is the part where we have to look at our own discomfort. the why.
Now we are going to start writing down all the pain and negative that not having this is creating in our life, not just in the area that we are trying to improve, but in all aspects. and try and be really honest with yourself here. this should get some emotional and even some physical responses. it is meant to be uncomfortable. How much worse will not accomplishing this make these things? if this area of your life does not improve, where will that lead?
get very clear on this. Emotional Pain is a powerful tool. you can either use it to compel you to take the necessary actions, or it can prevent you from ever trying to if you let yourself become to comfortable living in that pain.
Now that you are generally not willing to remain in your current situation, lets shift our focus towards all the joy and pleasure that achieving this goal will bring you in your life. again look at all areas of your life and really get into this. Feel the emotions as you are writing these down. Are you getting excited? you should be, look at how much better things will be after you follow your action plan and achieve the things you want to!
Ok, so the Why, also known as Leverage, is another thing that you will be visiting as part of your daily review of your goal(s). so now every day, you will look at the goal, how you are going to achieve it, and why you have to achieve it. then look again at how you are going to achieve this and where you are at this moment in the progress of your action plan. If you need to make a few adjustments, do so.
Now you know a much more effective and powerful way to use goal setting to get what you want out of your own life.
Remember, Success in not an option, it is a decision.
