Aadhaar is a 12 digit unique identification number given to every Indian resident based on their demographic and biometric data like photograph, fingerprints and iris scan. Although, it is not a citizen proof but it serves as one of the major identification proof in India. As of June 2017, 99% of the Indian population above 18 years of age has been issued with Aadhaar numbers. The objective behind this is to give a unique and universal identification to Indian residents that will help them avail various services like government subsidies in gas connections, enroll in government programs like Right to Education, open a bank account, get a landline/mobile connection and more.
