Maybe you have been on the healing path for a number of years now or maybe you have only just started out. Either way, what you may find is that you have the tendency to compare your own life with others.

Let’s say that you are working through some heavy stuff at the moment and someone else appears to be having a great time. Not only this, they may appear to have it all together.

The Contrast

Due to how you perceive this person’s life to be, it will be a lot harder for you to surrender to what is taking place in your own life. The resistance that you experience will be added to the pain that you are already experiencing.

Your mind could be filled with some of the following thoughts:

• Why can’t my life be different?
• This isn’t fair
• What am I so far behind?
• Why can’t I have what I want?
• Why can’t I just be like other people?
• I’m a failure

Filling In the Blanks

If you were able to take a step back from what is going on, it would give you the chance to see that you are on your own path and so is the other person. There is also the chance that this person’s life is radically different from how you perceive it to be.

You might not truly know what it is like or what this person has gone through to get to where they are. It will then be as though your mind has an idea of what one part of something looks like and it will have just assumed what the rest of it looks like.

You Are Unique

If with what this person’s life is like and what they have been through is put to one side, the truth is that you are not them and they are not you. Even if they are the same or of a similar age as you, it is unlikely that they have lived the same life as you have.

There could be so many things that you have experienced that they haven’t and vice versa, both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ things. Ultimately, you won’t have started off at the same point, with the same abilities and in the same condition or have faced the exact same hurdles.

Seeing Clearly

So, although you will be comparing yourself to a fellow human being, it will be as if you are comparing yourself to a being from another planet. That is how different your life and life experiences can be to theirs.

Through acknowledging this and being with what is going on for you at this moment, you will remove a lot of the resistance that you are experiencing. With this resistance out of the way, it will most likely be a lot easier for you to move through what is currently taking place.

Final Thoughts

What you resist is not only what will persist, it will also be what will grow. Keeping this in mind and the fact that your own path is unique and not like anyone else’s – that’s not to say there won’t be similarities – will allow you to honour your own journey.

One thing to remember is that you deserve your own love, kindness, support and acknowledgement as much as anyone else does. Please keep this in mind whenever you compare your life to others or are hard on yourself.
