For every person suffering from toenail fungus, it is very important to know that the chances of it recurring are very high, even after successful treatment. Therefore, hygiene and proper care of nails is of utmost importance at all times, to prevent the fungus from re-appearing, or for that matter, appearing in the first place. Toenail fungus is usually recognized by discoloration of toenails. The nails also start to grow thicker, and sometimes there is growth of black nails. Initially, the infection might seem harmless. But since the fungus dwells on the skin and tissues, near and under the nails, the condition can worsen with time. So it is best to seek treatment as soon as one notices the signs and symptoms of nail fungus.

There are several home remedies for toenail fungus, which are followed by people all over the world. One of the most effective remedies out of these is the application of Tea Tree Oil. This oil has properties to heal most kinds of bacterial, viral and fungal infections, and its regular application on the affected areas helps to speed up the treatment for toenail fungus.

One can also apply Apple Cider Vinegar on the affected area, three times a day. It will help build an acidic reaction, so that the infection does not grow and spread further. Moreover, it will speed up the process of getting a new nail. Ideally, the proper treatment for toenail fungus needs to be followed up till there is growth of a new nail.

Another one out of easy-to-do home remedies for toenail fungus is soaking one's feet in Listerine. This mouthwash has properties to disinfect the toenails, and it helps to ensure that the fungus does not spread further. It will also help to reduce the itching and irritation caused by the toenail fungus.

Many people also apply vapor rub on their feet, when suffering from toenail fungus. It is actually considered to be one of the most soothing home remedies for toenail fungus.

It is important to remember that all these home remedies will only turn out to be useful when one maintains proper hygiene. Without hygiene, the infection will keep on spreading further, and will never cure. Hence, the feet need to be clean and dry at all times. One should regularly wash the infected feet after every few hours. It is also advisable to soak one's feet in warm water daily, and then dry them later with a hairdryer. The hairdryer will take away all the leftover moisture, and the feet will be completely clean and dry.

Do not wear tight or closed shoes, when suffering from toenail fungus, as the accumulated sweat will spread the infection further. For the same reason, it is also not advisable to wear socks of nylon or any other material except cotton. Try and wear slippers and other kinds of open shoes as much as possible, so that the feet can breathe, and the infected area has constant contact with air.
