Depression comes quite often with hidden causes with little to no diagnosis. As the symptoms are frequently misunderstood or overlooked. As a community the understanding of depression has improved and a greater insight as to the need for treating the underlying causes to bring about healing and covering up the symptoms with medications.
Many people who are suffering from depression, don’t always recognize it as such and go undiagnosed because of inaccurate assumptions about the manifestation and what signs to look for. Resulting in a great number of people who are suffering from hidden symptoms and causes of depression because they may well feel an embarrassment to this misalignment with their health, to not even understand what could be causing these feelings of unhappiness, continual teariness, fatigue, lack of motivation with the inability to pull themselves out of these feelings. Quite often these feelings creep up over a period of time, sometimes years, so where it can be confusing to the sufferer is they may well be in a great place in their life, yet for reasons unknown to them experiencing these feelings.
As the causes are not obvious to the person suffering from depression they may well find ways of concealing or hiding these feelings believing that they are not valid. Making the diagnosis and understanding of the cause hidden leaving them vulnerable to the depressive feelings becoming worse. In order to lesson and eventually eliminate these feelings, it is important to recognize them and as painful as it might be to uncover the hidden causes.
Signs & Symptoms of Depression
Not Everyone Reacts The Same: Let’s firstly rule out the assumption that depression is always visible. Due to media advertising, health reports and how the various stereotypes are represented, it is fair to say that for the most part that you will be led to believe that from a person’s behaviour, the way they look or present themselves will determine whether they are either struggling or not struggling with depression. As an example the person who is well groomed, always has a smile on their face, appearing to be happy, may well be internally struggling and suffering with depression. On the other hand someone who rarely leaves their home, doesn’t dress particularly well, constantly appears miserable, may be easily recognized as a sufferer of depression, learning that not everyone behaves or reacts in the same way. This is where leaving judgement out and taking on board that each person will react different and there are different hidden causes. This is why, not unlike any other health condition that it is in uncovering the hidden causes and putting into place health solutions that will best support YOUR return to health. Rebuilding and healing your brain and nervous system.
Exhaustion and Tiredness is a Common Complaint: A common symptom of depression is constant exhaustion. It can be easy not to associate this with depression as often one of the underlying causes of depression can be the constant need to achieve, long working hours, distressing events that are making you constantly exhausted, not giving any thought to depression. Exhaustion and tiredness can be two-fold it can be a symptom as well as an underlying cause. Working long hours, causing irritability, anxiety, moodiness that can often lead to relationship problems then leading to depression.
Anger and Irritability: These thoughts and feelings are often overlooked as signs or symptoms of depression. You are struggling with people, they are annoying and giving you the “sh__ts” often for no apparent or logical reason. Even the dog that used to bring you peace and happiness is annoying. Flying off the handle has become the norm rather than a rare event. You may begin to realize that you have gone from a peaceful, happy, person, enjoying your family and friends to this person whom is constantly upset and argumentative.
Difficulty Responding to Love and Affection: A misunderstanding often made about depression, is that it’s all about “feelings” of sadness. Quite often experiencing feelings of sadness or unhappiness is only partial when it comes to depression. As I have mentioned with any area of ill-health the signs and symptoms are as individual as you. Many people whom I have treated over the years with depression have reported that they have felt a loss of loving and warm feelings to the point of numbness with their loved ones. Finding it difficult to share gestures of love and even kindness, just finding them agitating and annoying. The reasoning behind this is that deep down you are feeling so “Sh__tty” that you are finding it difficult to share their joy and happiness for life. These feelings can also spread across to your work colleagues, people you come across in public.
Self-Blame or Blaming Others: More often than not feelings of anger, disappointment, annoyance, frustration are taken out either on yourself by indulging in negative habits that will increase further the symptoms or to blaming others. The blaming of others often becomes a more defined to close relationships where explosions of anger and often violence can be synonymous.
Moving away from pleasurable activities to pain: Depression more often than not has you moving away from outings, activities and people that you once found pleasure and happiness with. Becoming both physically and emotionally drained making it difficult to feel enjoyment or fulfilment with anything you do or the people whom you are associated with. Leaving you in a constant state of emotional and often physical pain.
Depression is Nobody’s Fault: There is great misconception that depression is either your fault, someone elses or that of life events. Depression is a normal response to when life has just become too much, often coming at the most unexpected times. It can often come at a time when you are at a really great place in your life and feel you have worked through your stressful, painful and trying times.
Depression Is Found In The Ego: Depression root comes from the ego, in believing or feeling that life should be different, it should be better. That you should be different that you should be better. To begin to heal from depression, start by moving away from your ego and into a self-centred base of “everything is happening perfectly”. This was something that I learnt from reading Cheryl Richardson’s book “Feel the Fear and do it anyway”.
Healing Is Found In Your Heart: Rising above depression begins with moving your lifestyle habits and thinking from your head to your heart. Your head is the centre for your ego your heart is the centre of your soul, your intuition and safe place. Speaking to your heart from your mind requires words of Love, Peace, Understanding, Simplicity and that you are good enough without any trimmings.
Move from Pain to Pleasure: As difficult as it is begin replacing painful thoughts and activities with thoughts and activities that will bring pleasure
Each one of us are going to have times where we will either be suffering from feelings of depression to what is known as clinical depression. This is where the depression has developed into a habit within your body and the brain altering chemical brain patterns, along with the belief that there is no way out of it. It may have been further entrenched with poor eating habits, poor sleeping habits and feelings of over-achievement, inadequacy, self-doubt, and trauma. Self-destructive habits such as drugs or drinking. Most medications prescribed for depression will make it even more entrenched within your body.
