In 2006, historic Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla., became much more than just a place to race horses. It was that spring that the first in a series of renovations, designed to bring the facility into the 21st-century, were unveiled to the general public.

Now, in addition to watching and wagering on world-class Thoroughbred racing, visitors of Gulfstream Park can try their hand at different forms of gambling in the track's casino or spend time at The Village at Gulfstream Park, which offers a wide array of shops, bars and nightclubs.

Gulfstream Park opened for business in 1939. The track instantly became the winter destination for many of the top racing stables from throughout the mid-west and eastern part of the United States as well as the main proving ground for horses with aspirations to run in the Kentucky Derby. Gulfstream Park's live race meet is held each year from December thru April.

Gulfstream Park's casino features electronic table games, 1,250 slot machines and a poker room with 21 tables. It is open 365 days a year.

All of the popular slot-machine games are offered at the Gulfstream Park casino, including Wheel of Fortune, Triple Diamond and Top Dollar. Additionally, the poker room features all of the popular poker games, including Texas Hold 'Em and Omaha. The poker room also features nightly poker tournaments with reasonable buy-ins that are normally in the $40 range.

Patrons of the Gulfstream Park casino are also eligible to join the Good Luck Players Club. Members of the club, which is free to join, earn points based on amount of play. Those points can then be redeemed for such prizes as free bonus play, meals at some of the facilities top-class restaurants, show tickets and more.

A wide array of retail shops for visitors to enjoy make up The Village at Gulfstream Park. Among them are several high-end fashion stores, including Roxtar Coutere, Scene, Claudio Milano, and Martier. There are also several home-furnishing stores including Crate & Barrell, Pottery Barn and the Container Store.

The list of restaurants and nightclubs at The Village include Yard House, American Pie Brick Oven Pizza, Cadillac Ranch and Greenhouse Nightclub.

As you can see, this is no longer your grandfather's Gulfstream Park. The upgrades to this historic facility have helped to ensure Gulfstream Park will be a South Florida destination for generations to come.
