When you reach retirement age it is important to plan ahead and think about how you wish to spend your golden years. Some people decide to travel the world and see things they have never been able to throughout their working life; other people wish to settle down in the country to spend time with friends and family. Whatever you decide to do, getting the most out of life is just as important now as it ever was. By no means should you submit to a life of old age and pipe and slippers! 1. Plan your week. Throughout your working life, you always have had a plan, a schedule, something to run to. When you retire, you may feel lost - not knowing where you should be and simply sitting around waiting for the day to pass. If you are not careful, you could spend most of your time like this. This is why it is important to plan your week, give yourself things to do and places to go. How about joining an afte oon tea club, a golf club or arranging shopping trips with your friends? Allowing yourself to live within structured days is vital to getting the most out of your life. 2. Managing your finances. Of course, you don’t have a bottomless pit of money so planning your finances is also vital. Make sure you choose the right annuity for you and your partner if you have one. This gives you the money to spend your retirement how you wish, rather than worrying about bills and money. Keep a track of your outgoings and see what you can cut down on. 3. If you or your partner suffers from a disease which could mean an eventual care home is required, then considering your NHS Continuing care costs is important. This allows you to afford or even avoid care fees, no matter what the eventuality. Needing continuing care means you could be eligible to have your fees refunded or covered by the NHS. Preparing in such a way means you can enjoy life without the worry of “what if.” 4. Enjoy yourself! Whatever you’re doing, however you spend your days, remember to enjoy each unique moment. Getting a new hobby, seeing a new city or simply relaxing in the comfort of your home is a great way to get the most out of life. After working the majority of your life, you deserve a little “you” time!
